Seriously? It isn't even in motherboards yet. It can't be "dead" before it even launches properly. It'll come in time, there was at least one demonstrated at CES.
 
its been added to motherboards at the same time as M.2, starting with 9x series chips, there are plenty of M.2 drives but nothing for SATA express.

Its been around since spring 2014.
 
I've been wondering the same thing. Seems like M.2 and PCI-e drives are gaining all the traction. It's in the Rampage V Extreme and a few others.

sata express launched with z97/h97 boards in spring 2014, looking at some new x99 boards seems some companies already gave up on it, a lot of x99 boards don't have sata express.
 
SATA Express seems to me as future technology shoved into current hardware with the old way of thinking: 50mm wide connectors (remember IDE ?), wide cables and large, metal boxes. Just like 1995 !

M.2 is a much more logical storage system as one or two primary (SSD) drives are enough for 99% of the consumers and I can see it being expanded to more slots as the technology gets more acceptance.

SATA Express might have a future in bulk storage applications, like NAS'es or workstations. But it's already behind in that regard since it's not even finalized yet.

M.2 can TODAY offer you 1.4GB/s storage and 2.0GB/s tomorrow. SATA Express hasn't even finalized the cable you need to connect those metal boxes that have the SSD's inside of them. And then it's still only PCIe x2 while M.2 can already offer PCIe x4.

Don't forget that M.2 is an implementation of SATA Express. Most systems today run with only a single SSD. An M.2 SSD does not need cables or cases and is much cheaper for system builders. That is why there are basically no SATA Express SSDs around - the few you would sell to the people wanting more than one in a system are not worth it.
 
plus m.2 can work in any system including laptops and future small NUC/brix systems, larger customer base.

m.2 can take away PCI-e lanes that would otherwise be used for SATA, depending on how the motherboard is designed.

Ah right I wasn't aware of this. My Asus Gene VII doesn't have this limitation. Bandwidth is halved on the x4 slot and the mPCIe slot is disabled instead.

Can you even boot an OS from M.2? I hear people are having issues with the Z97 chipsets and M.2 on mobo's lately due to the untested nature of "new" technology and standard that it is.

Yes you can boot from M.2, but not just as easy (yet) as SATA SSD.

Booting from PCIe SSD's that don't have a boot ROM or how it's called, need a supporting motherboard (actually, UEFI) Windows 8, modern Linux or Mac. For Windows 7, drivers on install and a boot ROM are needed as far as I know. NVMe support started from Windows 8.1 I believe.

Maybe Windows 10 will make M.2 adoption a lot faster if has support for native booting, then i'll be all over it. Till then, im not exactly "suffering* with SSD on SATA3
