Is Sapphire still...

...the ATI reference board maker? I'm looking at 4870 1GB's by four different builders, all the same price. The only names I recognize are Diamond and Sapphire, and I distinctly remember Sapphire being ATI's reference board maker. Is this still the case? Or does ATI not have one anymore, since they got bought by AMD?

Sapphire is the main reference board supplier.

Diamond is a US company that sells ATI cards. Same basic idea as BFG or evga.
Unfortunately only VisionTek offers a "lifetime" warranty, they are also US based.

No ATI vendors have step-up programs like BFG or evga.

How are VisionTek's boards normally? I wouldn't mind getting a lifetime warranty from a US based firm, but I don't want to buy some shoddy board either.

edit: Hmm, nevermind. I can't seem to find a VisionTek 1GB 4870 anywhere. Perhaps they haven't released their 1GB card yet. I guess I'll go with Diamond or Sapphire still.

I wouldn't buy Sapphire unless you can consider the card a completely disposable purchase. Sapphire cards are likely to fail prematurely, and you are also unlikely to get it RMA'd.

If you buy from newegg, they cover the sapphire for 1 year replacement. If it dies after that though, you're left with sapphire themselves.

Sapphire tech support is THE worst. Take forever to respond, sometimes refuse RMAs for no good reason, send back inferior cards as replacement, send back untested obviously broken cards, charge 'service fee' for this kind of behavior too. The WORST.

I had the worst experience with Sapphire. THE WORST. I had to ship my 9800 Pro and pay $25 for the return. It took 5 weeks to get it back. This is just terrible. Stay away from Sapphire.

Funny, I also RMA'd a 9800 Pro to Sapphire and first they "lost" it but suddenly "found" it again when I sent a copy of the signature of "Jorge" from their warehouse who took delivery of it. They took a month to get me the replacement and then charged me $15 for this so-called "service". THE WORST!

Oh yeah, and I sent in an X800GTO2 (I realize this card was a "limited edition" supposedly) and got back a totally different card bearing the same sticker(!)...blue PCB instead of red, different GPU under the heatsink, different RAM chips, no PCIe power connector...If you don't have the old part you should at least upgrade the customer to something nicer so they don't feel totally shat upon.
