is paint a problem on HS?

oaky... i've just got a random question...

if i've got an older-ish HS and it's got that baked-on black paint on it (it's called something, but i can't remember what exactly) does that impede heat transfer from the sink to the air signifigantly? if it does, is there any way to remove it, short of some sorta high-tech acid bath???

just curious... thanks

Paint is very rare on heatsinks, and it does impede heat transfer. Are you sure it's not anodized?

hmm... all i know is that it's black paint on an oldish heatsink (i think from an early model eMachine :D ) it may be anodized, but i don't know how to tell the diffrence.

"plafstik schtaste. orf acidsch taste.
just thried mihne... acidisch."

*Allow the heatsink to cool down.

heh... yeah i 45C heatsink might burn a little.... : ) i'll give that a shot anyway... lol

so next question: (the winner gets $20...) (okay not really)
how do i get this crap off?

lead...? if it's REALLY old

no, it's probably not paint, I've never seen a painted heatsink. It's almost definitely anodized. and it will be pretty hard to get that off the fins. you can easily sand it off the base though...

yeah... i guess i'll have to live then. i was thinking some kinda acid bath, but hey... i think that's a little outta my range here. 'sides: don't want to melt off any hands or anything!
they made heat sinks outta LEAD?! (or was that just the paint?!)
i'll sand the hell outta the base. lap it. i used to know a good lapping guide, but i guess it sorta fell through the cracks... anyone have a good one or know where to find a good guide? thanks.

no, i was referring to the old lead paint that kids used to eat because it tasted good... :D

you can blowtorch it for a while. just don't leave the torch in the same palce for too long or the heatsink will melt. (i tried it. its fun:D)

ummmm, ok, guess you like playing with fire

doesn't everyone??? :p

really though, the blowtorch i have is probably the coolest thing i have except for my computers, though that is debatable, as you don't get cool flames and melted stff with computers. well, as long as you do it right...:D

the only problems i can tell with blowtorching aluminum to de-anodize it are it can melt it and it discolors it a bit. (it looks yellow-gray. ish.)

what, you don't?

ya, but i ain't taking a blowtorch to a hs for no reason ;)

besides, i prefer big explosions than a whimpy blowtorch

that sounds like a pretty good idea... with the blowtorch and all.... besides it's fun : ) i'm not sure where i could get my hands on a blow torch, but i think i could manage that somehow.... is it possible to just use a low-temp, clean burnging flame to do the same thing?
but... would the crap left over from the burnt {whatever it is} impede heat transfer more than in the first place?

This happen to one of my old TB's when the vcore kreeped past 2volt and a cheap alu heatsink didnt knew what he was expericing.

LOL, but i didn't relize the old athlons had a heatspreader?

kllrnohj: i think that's a k6-2, which do have heatspreaders on them. dunno why amd dropped the heatspreader on the socket a chips.

Dathak512: lowes has a micro butane torch for ~$20. should work great.

Buy two. Use one to blow the other up... Er, better not. ;)

i hav a few of those heatsinks, assuming i understood what your description meant

i hav two slot PIIs with those heatsinks and also a pentium heatsink

i kno its paint because it has a few scratches on it and the deeper ones show bare metal

anodizing does the same thing... i'd think it would be anodizine because it is easier to get a uniform coat that painting would give (just requires giving the thing an electric acid bath:D)

Please realize that I'm poor and will not be capable of paying your medical bills... ;)

BTW, when a heatsink is anodized, you can scrape down through the anodiziation and get to 'bare metal'. So, yeah, it's anodized, not painted.

Speaking of painting, I have to go at my hood ornament again.

lmfao That's the perfect way to do that, too. ;) I should have thought about that while I was still in High School... :p

whats anodize?

Anodizing is using a chemical process to change the color of certain metals, including aluminum, without using paint. :)
