Is P4 2.4 fast enough for DOOM3?

Hi All,

I have the option to replace my current ATi 9800XT with either a GeForce 6800 GT or X800 XT PE (hopefully!).
Now the thing is my system:
Is my P4 2.4 fast enough to handle this setup when I play DOOM3, Pain Killer and Far Cry?


Mind you:

1 - I DON'T use any AA/AF.
2 - Max Resolution: 1600x1200x32 85Hz Monitor Refresh Rate

With the above consideration, can I turn all the settings to the max?


My System Spec:
Pentium®4 2.4B GHz, Abit IT7-MAX2, Mushkin DDR 2700 [1GB Total], ATi RADEON™ 9800XT [256MB] , Maxtor 120GB 7200RPM HDDs (X2 - 240GB Total) Sound Blaster Audigy2 Platinum , Microsoft® Windows XP® Professional OS
 
it may struggle a little but i can' reallysee it being much of a bottleneck in far cry or painkiller. maybe doom 3 but i think it should be fine
 
Thanks for the responses. Mind you that my MoBo can NOT handle the 800FSB, so I am stuck with a P4 2.8 533FSB option (and oc'ing to 3.0GHz barrier)
 
i managed to overclock my 2.4b to 3.0ghz on an Asus P4PE 533fsb (18x167). it runs rock solid at that speed on stock voltage. the cpu goes to 3.2ghz but not without some voltage increase.

What are your temps on that oc? I run my 2.8B at 3.06 but I'm worried about pushing it higher cuz of temps (45 idle, 55 load).

That 2.4 with a little oc should handle those games well enough. If not, the 3.06B might be cheap enough by then to pop it in and try and get it to around 3.4 GHz
 
Sure not getting 1600x1200 resolution considering reports are coming out max resolution really of 1024x768 on the latest top of the line cards. Else than that I'm sure it will do fine.

huh, what 3Ghz barrier????

Have you tried overclocking your 2.4B ? A lot of them will do near 3Ghz, if you're lucky faster. The added CPU speed plus extra FSB will definitely help A LOT.

Also, for $230 you could get a 3.06Ghz P4 533FSB with HyperThreading, which would be fast enough on its own.... and if you overclocked it... easily to 3.2+Ghz it would just be icing on the cake.

At 3.1ghz, the CPU idles at 40C and reaches 60C under load. I've been running at that speed for close to 2 years now with no problems at all.
 
With no AA or AF then your proc will be more than fine with a 6800gt or X800pro..
 
playing at 1600x1200 with either card will probably be fine for your system (with no AA/AF).
 
Overclock your cpu as far as you can. Overclock your GT too. Then deal with it. No AA/no AF you should be fine.

Damn, 700 MHz is a hella good oc. Pretty standard temps too.

I think I'll have to wait till I can get into my air conditioned apartment to oc more, cuz the high ambient is just killing it.
 
this made me wonder if my 2.6c at stock with 2x256 Kingmax 400mhz would do the job (once i get my 6800gt).

i have tried overclocking my cpu and i got it up to about 3.1 ghz before it rebooted itself. i have a msi neo2 865pe mobo and used the control center prog and the bios to up the fsb. i looked in the bios and the multiplier is locked, can't change it, so i could only up the fsb. does this effect the memory as well?

any advice on how to unlock my multiplier and is my memory causing the bottleneck? what are the risks involved in tampering with these settings and is it worth it?

btw i have an aluminium case with a side fan and an extractor fan above the cpu. psu is procase 500 watt.

If you're trying to run that Kingmax DDR400 at 1:1 memory ratio @ 3.1Ghz = 238FSB = DDR477!!! yeah I'm sure thats your bottleneck.

Try switching to 5:4 ratio and shoot for 250 FSB (go up gradually, moniter temps, and test for stability with Prime95 and/or 3dMark). That would give you a 3.25Ghz CPU with memory perfectly at specification of DDR400. (so you can keep timing tight)
Most 2.6C's did 3.25 with a little effort. Also make sure your AGP/PCI bus is FIXED at 33/66. Thats the only real risk if you dont lock it you could corrupt your harddrive and have to reinstall windows. Almost everything else, if you push too far there's just an error so you have to reboot at a slower speed.

it all makes sense, but can u perhaps tell me where i could change the ratio? do i need special software to do so? i just hope my stock fan can handle the temp. what is a dangerous temp for a p4 to run at? i already got some weird error boxes coming up when i tuned the fsb up too much and sometimes when i log on to windows it pauses for like a minute b4 it carries on loading. strange...

How much of a jump would it be if I upgrade my 2.4G proc to a 3.06G one? I'm thinking about making the move but not sure if it's worth it.

Use the BIOS controls. When the computer is booting you press delete and go in to the various screens to find it. With Abit its all in the softmenu screen. On other boards its usually under CPU config, etc.
You have to look for "memory ratio" and "agp/pci ratio"
you want the agp/pci ratio either "locked" or "fixed" and set to 33/66, etc.

for memory ratio I believe on MSI boards its called by what its meant to run at.
Ex: at 800FSB to use the 5:4 ratio would be DDR333, the 3:2 ratio (even slower) would be called DDR266, 1:1 ratio would be DDR400 setting.
so try that.

u'r a smart guy :)

so cpu ratio stays "locked", and thats ok then. memory speed must be turned down to 333. and then overclock country ;)

will give it a try when i get home.

Actually its the agp/pci ratio that stays "locked" at 33/66, there is no cpu ratio. The 5:4 ratio he's talking about is commonly called the "memory divider"

You may already know that, and I may just be spouting terminology, but I am just checkin that you know what you are doing :)
 
i saw the minimum specs of 1.5 ghz cpu 512mb of ram and a FX geforce or 9600 to 9800 w/ 128mb video ram

You should be fine
