heres my system specs

Intel d930 dual core(2x3.0ghz)
2gb Kingston DDRII
Intel945gtp
x1900xt 512mb
ultra connect 500w psu

i have tried overclocking this card but my benches never really go beyond the default.
heres what i have at stock

3dmark05- 8542
3dmark06- 5431
aquamark3- 80,437
f.e.a.r.- 1600x1200 all settings on and maxed 66fps avg

and i just can't figure out why my cards overclocking has no effect, i have followed the guide to over clocking with ati tool on the x1900xt. now i am thinking that maybe its my cpu holding it back. is this the case?

i just don't get why my gpu overclocks don't result in any gains at all. maybe its time to overclock the hell out of my 930.....everyone else seems to be getting 10,000+ in 3dmark 05 with this card.

Well perhaps for running "synthetic benchmarks" you are. I don't remember doesn't the CPU score play a role for 3D Mark 2005 as well or was that 2006...

I would say it's due to a limitation of the GPU's architecture. I would use this analogy: you can only force so much water through a pipe of a certain diameter. There comes a point where using greater water pressure does not increase the flow. That is when you need a bigger pipe...if you follow my meaning. If I'm totally off-track, someone please correct me.

well i am thinking that since 3dmark05 and most games for that matter aren't multithreaded then its only using my cpu as a single 3.0ghz. maybe i am doing something wrong with the o/c on this card, it way more complicated then oc'ing and of my previous cards. and it would be the first card i ever owned that simply cannot be improved from stock if thats the case. i have seen people with similar setups break 10,000 3dmark so it can't be the gpu....i don't think

Yeah, I don't think 05 is multi-threaded, but 06 is. You're also right about most games. That's why I said you MAY be slightly limited because the [H] article I linked to says you need a 3.2ghz or better Intel, and you may just be using a single core in games.

thats what i am thinking, i should o/c to 3.6 ghz since i know this cpu will do that on aiir and see. but that means getting a new motherboard since intel boards have no o/c ability in the bios.

That would certainly increase your 3DMark score, because as previously mentioned, the CPU performance is part of the composite score. However, I doubt you'll see the same gains in actual games. So, if you just want bragging rights for 3DMark, that will work. If you want better gaming performance, you're probably wasting your time.

i am not woried about in game performance, i can already max out any game at 1600x1200 with this card at stock. i just need to find a software o/c package that supports this board so i can try it out.

just clocked the cpu up to 3.35ghz on each core and my aquamark score jumped to 88,817 with stock clocks on the video card.

I have an x1900xt paired with a 3700+ and i thought i was cpu limited so i overclocked the cpu to 2.8 and i saw an improvement in almost every game i played. I think real world gameplay says alot more than synthetic benchmarks, but hey if you want the highest aquamark score possible more power to you.

What program did you overclock with?

Trust me your cpu limited. Get your fsb up to at least 250 and see. Only then did i break 10k on my setup.

Ur complaining about 66FPS at high settings on FEAR??? Soft shadow on or not????

Marks don't mean jack shit. What you should do is compare a similarly clocked xtx with your xtx. If their fps is higher, then you have a problem. Stressing the video card will also offset bottlenecking in games.

soft shadows are on,no i am not complaining at all about in game performance.

i overclocked the cpu with systool, its a pain in the ass though so i am looking at picking up a new motherboard this week.

im feelin pretty cpu limited with my 1900XT flashed to a XTX , 3400+ is killin me in games at my resolution 1680x1050 ... don't know what to go with a x2 3800 or a 4000+ single core

did you overclock that cpu? if you didn't i would just o/c itto the clocks of a 4000+ and save yourself the cash.

It's not CPU limited, it's called being GPU limited...

In short, getting a better processor isn't going to fix things much at all. The only time processors even remotely effect your score such that there is a difference between a 3400+ and a 4000+ would be if you are gaming at 640x480...

Are you CPU limited? YES.

If you overclock your video card and do not get better results it is most likely your CPU holding you back.

He never said he overclocked it. And the day that the Pentium D 930 is limiting anything will be quite a way down the road...

You need to learn how to read. In the first post he was asking why overclocking his video card was not netting additional performance.

With a 3.0Ghz Clock speed you are most definatly CPU limited.

Rig in my sig, nails over 100k in AM3. And our videocards are probally around even in terms of speed.

LOL, no need to get offensive, I was simply thinking of another post.

Its both CPU and GPU limited depending on the game your playing but in most its GPU limited.

Your CPU limited when changing resolution or settings has little to no impact on performance
Your GPU limited when performance drops when increasing resolution and settings.

i overclocked my cpu to 3.8ghz and mo i am pulling well over 100,000 so problem solved in that regard, i am also pulling 6,500+ in 3dmark 06. so i guess i am at expected numbers now.

This can also be extended to say when you increase the video cards clock speed at a given resoulution and the performance does not change you are CPU limited.
