It's been folding great forever now but I've been getting random BSOD's when folding. These have come out of the blue I don't know what caused them but the memory dump finally pointed me at something. Orginally I thought it was the RAM but it continues doing this with new ram.

Processor: Phenom 9600 no OC
Ram: OCZ Reaper 4 gig
Video Cards: 4 x gtx 250
Motherboard: MSI K9A2
PSU: Corsair 1 kw
OS: Win xp 64
 
Run Prime95 with small FFTs overnight with your CPU set at stock speeds and see if any errors turn up.
 
Perfectly stable after 9 hours of prime 95 with small FFT's and 2 hours with random FFT's. Seems to only crash when running the SMP client. Video card clients seem to run fine. As soon as the SMP client starts (like after 15mins) it crashes.
 
hmm weird the smp client shouldnt be pushing your processor harder then prime95.. i mean i know my processor isnt prime95 stable for 24 hours but can run the 2 smp clients perfectly fine.. could be the OS or smp client its self.. but i dont know about the client enough to pin point exactly what could cause it..
 
Check the temp of the north bridge. That board will run hot while folding. If so just mount a fan to the NB (I superglued mine on and its been there for a year
 
Seems like more of an issue with the SMP client then. Try clearing out the work and queue files as well as the core executable, and see if there's any improvement.
 
random bsods while install xp 64 bit, some of them with no title, i did get a few "ran out of virtual memory" errors. This is on a machine with 4 gigs of ram.... grrr. Could a be a hard drive issue now?
 
since virtual memory is hard drive related.. id take a guess that it might be.. try throwing the hdd in another computer and try running the manufacture diagnosing program.. if its a seagate or WD..
 
argh mother****. This thing is a pain in the ass to diagnose. I have 6 mini dumps and none of them are shedding any light into what the problem is. I'm getting pfn list corrupt errors installing windows now, memory management bsods, and errors with ntfs.sys now! I'm seriously about to just sell this hunk of junk! I need a am2 cpu, another hard drive, and another motherboard to figure out wtf is wrong. I just don't think it's the motherboard it's been stable in all other aspects (ie video card folding goes along fine). The cpu passed prime 95 12 hour burn in test, and the hard drive passed all SMART diagnostics and a sector by sector scan.

Any other suggestions before I banish this thing to my closet until I get more time to work on it next week?

Remember I was going to port this thing to hardocp for the chimp challenge, you guys help me you get 25k ppd+ a day :).
 
how are your temps? ...cables? ..maybe PSU is going on yuh?

have you tried running just one vidcard and see if you get same errors? ..even tho it folded fine before with all 4

You said you have put new RAM in the machine, however, have you run memtest on the old or new RAM? I would never replace RAM before running memtest. Also, since you seem to be getting a host of different problems now, it often points to RAM.

The RAM might not be bad but it could be running settings it doesn't like or doesn't like with that board. You could try loosening the timings and/or giving the RAM a little bit more voltage. If the RAM is set to SPD timings, manually set the RAM timings to what they should be. I've seen a lot of problems fixed by taking settings off of auto and putting the settings in manually.

 
I agree with Smokey.

Run MEMTEST (the bootable ISO version). If you have any errors... then it is memory related. Try MEMTEST for 24 hours to see what happens.
 
Update!

I had already run memtest on both sets of ram with no problem.

I was in the engineering computer lab and by chance asked them if they had a spare hard drive I could use. They had an IDE 20gb (actually about 50 of them)! Loaded windows without a problem and also installed sp2 without a problem (both of which gave me headaches and a ton of bsod's). My sata cd-rom works fine so do you guys think it's just a bad hard drive?
