Hi there

I have Asrock X58 Extreme motherboard and 6 sticks of Patriot Viper 1600Mhz 8.8.8.24 RAM.

My problem seems to be that OC 6 DIMMS is harder than 3 DIMMS. Using 3 DIMMs I can gor to 4.0 GHz easily with some relaxed ram timings but on 6 DIMM's, after 6 days of trial and error I got this:

CPU speed: 3.6Ghz
Memory speed: 1369 Mhz
Memory Latency: 7.7.7.20
CPU Voltage: 1.16250 (utility shows it is 1.1520 V)
Dram voltage: 1.669 V

All other on stock settings... I get 39 degrees idle and 54 degress running prime95 all night. I have Noctua cooler.

Now I can not lower RAM voltage as I'd like to because then I can overclock just to 3.2Ghz. But I think 1.669 is not to extreme.

I can put CPU higher to 3.8Ghz but at a cost of rising the CPU voltage to 1.3V and as I see in Asrock Utility I an now at 88Watt CPU power at full load and if the CPU voltage is 1.3V I am at 135W. That's a lot of Watt for a small difference.

That is the reason I settled with the above specification. Would you say this is a normal overclock? I am quite a beginner in this. Is OC with 6 DIMM's generaly harder than 3 DIMM's? If so, you would make "piece" and stay with my achievement.

Yes, my i920 is D0 stepping.

Thanx

Jerry

You've hit one of the main issues with running more memory modules.
Make sure they arent getting too hot, I cool mine and the motherboard chipset with an 80mm fan inside the PC.
Try bumping the memory voltage if they arent too hot (remain within spec for the voltage).

Failing that, can you divide the memory speed down a bit?
Memory speed isnt that crucial.

I can of course make memory 1033 Mhz or something near that and then I can down from 1.699V. How can I see what the memory temp is?

I don't dare to go more than 1.669V on memory :-(

So you would say with 6 sticks of RAM I've pretty much a good OC?

Check memory temp by putting your finger on it.
What voltage is the memory specced to?
Try a slower ram speed.

You'd better wait for the i7 guys to reply regarding whether the OC is good, I'm still on socket 775.

You'll probably need the 1.3V with 12 gigs, but that's just my experience with my D0. Antec Spotcool, the one solution to cooling your memory and NB (and in my case SB and mosfets) with one fan:

My memory with finger is warm. The memory is specce at 1.5V - 1.65V (with i7 because of the controller).

If I put 1.3V on CPu I get 69 degrees and use 130W instead of 59 degress and 86W now on load. Is it worth the Watt and teperature difference to go any higher?

3.6GHz a pretty good overclock for that CPU voltage, but you can push it a bit higher by loosening the timing of your RAM.

I have the following specs on my 920 D0 on air with 12 GB of RAM:

D0 190x20 = 3.8GHz
HT Enabled
Turbo Disabled
PC12800 @ 1520MHz (8-8-8-24)
Vcore: 1.25
CPU PLL: 1.814
QPI/DRAM Link: 1.275
DRAM Voltage: 1.64
Idle Temp: 40c

Stability Check: Intel Burn Test
10 Runs, maximum RAM, 16 threads
max load temp: 73c, zero error

Thanx. My problem is I can not loosen the timings and I don't know why :-( Until 1600 Mhz is reached it has 7-7-7-20 and then 8-8-8-24 on auto. If I could get it to 8-8-8-24 on a 1500 or 1400Mhz I think itćwould work. As soon as in BIOS I change CAS and other things from auto to a number, computer doesn't boot :(

I don't know how to disable or enable the turbo on the AsRock board, I see no setting for it :-(

My max temp of CPU is 54 degrees maybe because I have it set on 1.15V.

Take the settings off auto and manually set timings in bios to 8-8-8-24 @ 1.65.

maybe the problem is that I change tCL, tRCD, tRAS, tRFC but leave others on auto (tWR, tWTR, tRRD, tRTP, tFAW).

UPDATE: I found out it is the tCL I can not change :-( If I change tCL from 7 to 8 I can not post any more :-( Any ideas? Bad mobo?
