I am running 2, 74GB WD raptors in raid 0. The other day lighting struck a cable tower near my house, some of the surge followed the cable line to my house where. The cable line was grounded where it attaches to the house. Needless to say some how the extra juice seems to have bypassed 2 surge protectors and a battery back up and cooked my computer.

I have the feeling it just got my motherboard because the fans and lights all spin up when I power it on but no screen will come up or anything. Changed monitors, video cards memory, and I unplugged everything not needed to run the computer still no post or signal to the monitor. The post led diagnostic read out was giving me all kinds of reserved codes and things that didn't correspond in the manual.

To my question, if the drives are unharmed and I just pop another 680I motherboard in there, set it up for raid drives will I have to format or will it just pick up and recognize the drives were in raid before and go on?

Thanks,
Devin

If it's another board with the same raid controller it -should- work.

Yup. Will have to be the same controller as the previous one. Thats the problem with MB raid controllers, if the mb goes, so does your array. Then again, same with a card-bound array. :D

Thanks for the quick replies, I am not sure but I think the raid controller was built into the 680I chipset.

If thats the case which I hope it is, I should be good. I had most of the important stuff backed up. Just hate to lose all those things you forget to back up, saved games etc.

I was looking at Norton Ghost is it possible to make a disc image of raid 0 drives?
For back up purposes.

Thanks,
Devin Ferguson

Ghost will work. Acronis True Image is better. I have the same drives in raid 0 and I back mine up all the time. In fact, when I set up the raid, I used ghost to make an image of a single drive and then wrote it to the raid array. Everything worked fine.

ultimatebootcd and copywipe tools. it copies quickly to a backup drive, there are also partition managers to restore the copied partition to the hosed drive, pretty handy.
