Is my graphics card overheating?

I think I'm having some problems with my graphics card overheating. I have a Gigabyte 9800 pro 128. It has never been overclocked and has been running stock since I bought it last fall. However, lately I'll be in middle of a game and everything freezes up, and this is also accompanied by a high-pitch whistle sound through my speakers. The only way to get out of it is to hard boot the computer. I've opened the case with the computer on and the fan is still working on the card. My case is fairly cooled and open.

Has anyone ever had this problem? Could something else be causing this? Should I buy a new heatsink/fan for the graphics card? Any suggestions you guys have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Oh yeah, sometimes it happens right away when I start a game, and then other times I'll play for hours without it happening? Usually by the 3rd time I restart my computer it runs pretty good, at least for a while. Very strange.

I had the same problem, it happened or started in the summer actually. THis was with my 9700pro. I swore it was overheating.
But after a while I decided to get a radeon9800 pro, thought my 9700pro was defective. The 9800pro worked better but after a while it would lock up! It locked up less then my radeon9700 pro though.

SO what finally fixed that annoying freeze and high piticed noise lock.

I bought a new motherboard, ram, cpu, and ever since had 0 lock up problems! My old system was a athlon XP 1600, with msi kt266 motherboard.

What system do you have? If your running stock settings its most likely your system especially if its an older one.

Actually, to prove its not overheating your card is locking sometimes when you start playing the games. This also happened to me and I should of reailzed that its not the overheating becuase if it was it would take at least a few minutes. I'm sure your system never locks outside the games in 2d right? My guess would be some kind of bug in the AGP bus of your motherboard...

Wow, thanks guys. Eddie500, it sounds like mine is doing the same thing yours did. I currently have a athlon XP 1800, with a ECS K7s5a (or something like that). Basically a cheap motherboard. I was planning on upgrading soon, so hopefully that will solve it.

But yeah, it never locks up running 2d applications, only when I play a game. And it's inconsistant with that too. Thanks again for your help.

What are you running now? If you don't mind me asking.
Never mind, I just saw you sig.
