recently ive done some work to my computer... ive got a new PSU ... ive re wired my case... among others.

With rewiring the case came rewiring the back fans which i have been putting off to wire into my fan controller that ive had for coming on 4 years. Now my back fans are 2 Y.S. Tech 120mm fans and if anyone knows these they take like 6watts each and i have one for exhauset and one on my Thermalright XP-120.

Now i usually had these connected to 5v splitters on molex from my PSU for a short fix. Now i was summing up the energy to actually rewire them into the fan controller that was on the other side of the case.

After i rewired them and booted up... the first thing the fans did was not turn, just sit and wiggle back and forth... i knew form past this ment they needed extra juice to get going.. so i upped a little more... same... Upped a little more... same. When i got to exactly max output on the controller they finily turned on and damn loud about 54db each.

And so i got them going and i put the case back togather... then sat at my computer for a while.. it was too loud. So i turned them down just a little bit. And play some more... and i noticed my leg getting really hot. So i looked down and saw that my fans were not spinning but just wiggling... and so i emeidiatly turn them up on high and then they spinn back up to max.

Then i noticed there is something wrong with something.. Because i used to have my exhaust YStech in the front of my case and on the controller and it was fine... and that was just one of the fans on the controller. Then i got the thermalright and i got anouther YStech and proceeded to put the other one in the back and have them both on 5v.

Now im sitting here with these really loud fans. I was in the market for a new fan controller, but i want to keep it the same. Mine is a 3.5" 4 fan hookup controller. So i knew of anouther one of the same, but assumingly better brand Vantec. its the same 3.5" like i want. for like 20 bucks shipped at newegg.

I initially thought your fans cant run under the rated voltage and have changed my response after re-reading...

I think the power supplied to the fans isnt as high as you hope or isnt smoothed enough.
It could be the fan controller is being overdriven and the voltage it can supply isnt very high for the current it is supplying. This is likely to kill the fan controller!
(in other words, the fan controller cant drive those fans)

I have heard a number of high dB fans running successfully at low volts and they are still damn loud.
I recommend getting some quieter fans anyway.

in a normal loudness room (yaknow, not silent) I would go for a max total fan noise of around 30 to 33dB.
Starting from 1 fan (you should know how loud dB this is), each time you double the number of fans (of the same type) you will get another 3dB loudness.

If it wasnt too loud before when using 5V from the PSU to drive them, I'd put it back like that :)

ps your post is sooo hard to read!

thanks for the feedback... but ive found at lower RPMs these fans are quiet anough for almost silent... such as it was on the 5v from the straight molex... but im thinking about just getting a new controller.. this nexus one can supply 18watts per channel that should be enough for smooth throttling for these fans...

EDIT: i broke up the post.. hoping it could be easly read now...
