Is my E4400 too hot?

Hey guys.

Looking at CoreTemp's temp log, when no activity is happening (AFK), it sits at around 40 C.
The highest it's been is at 66 C, during gaming.

This is at stock voltage (1.325) at 2.8 GHz.

My HSF's fan is running at 100%, as are my Lian-Li's two intake fans.

Is there something to be worried about here?

Yeah I'd say ur running a little hot, might want to invest in a new h/s and some higher cfm fans.

A new heatsink? That's a joke. I think my Scythe Ninja Rev. B is capable. Maybe it's the thermal paste application? I did it perfectly though.

Hmm a bit high, i'd want to stay at least under 60 C at load

try reseating but i'm on record as hating the ninja rev B and those fsking push pins
 
I guess 66 C was due to Orthos, actually. I was playing WoW today and the highest temp in the log is a 55 C. That's not too bad, is it? What should I be getting with this particular heatsink?

No thats fine but I still think you should be under 60 C, even with orthos.
 
I would lap it but I don't feel like wasting that nice 3 year warranty.

Yea...I want to...especially since just now it seems not to like even 2.8 on stock voltage (programs just stopped responding all of a sudden, Windows interface was like a mix between classic and 'new').

I may run it at 2.6 or 2.7 GHz for a while and see how it goes - perhaps the 100 or 200 MHz is not worth.

Do you guys think experimenting with different voltages in pretty rapid succession could have caused these issues? I never even took it above 1.5. I thought this was the normal way to test - put in a voltage and clock, have it reboot, and see if it POSTs?

Tell me about it. Whilst mine does a good job of cooling my OC'd E6600 (Orthos (Small FFTs) after a few hours sits at 60c)) it was a b1tch to fit. Fins right over those nightmare pins. As I commented in another thread, give me back S478 clips any day :)
 
Mine runs hot too.

40idle and 72load when under prime for 1 hour @ 3ghz 1.39v (Enzotech Ultra-X Heatsink)
 
I get 30C idle and 48 max load with my E6420 and it is OCed just a little... But I think you should not worry to much with them temp's, it's not to hot.
 
I just want to make a note to everyone, overclocking will significantly increase your load temperatures even at stock voltages.

At stock voltages and stock clock speed, my load temperature was 45C. At the same voltage at 3.2Ghz my core temperature was at 57C (CoreTemp 0.95).

And note that I use watercooling.
