Is my dvd drive bad?

I have an sh-s183l dvd drive. For xmas my kids got some movies that include digital copies for itunes. Despicable Me, Sorcerer Apprentice, Toy Story 3. I had trouble getting the dvd to recognize TS3 and sorcerer. It kept saying to insert a dvd when it was already in. Finally it did find them and i got them imported. However the despicable me dvd is not found no matter what i do. If i put in a burned dvd it finds it no problem. Is there something special about these digital copy discs? they have a dvd-rom logo on them.

It may be the upper and lower filters. Or firmware, like sathsayin stated. I also have had corrupted drivers that causes a similar issue.
 
firmware is the newest. i got it to burn a couple of dvd+r today, but on the last one it made a strange grind sound and never progressed past 3%. Locked up the system. Im just gonna spend the $25 and get a new one for piece of mind. Recommendations??
