Is my CPU deteriorating?

I have a 2.4C that was running great at 3.4. It was running on a ABit IC7-G fine until I killed the motherboard by being an idiot and plugging in a fan incorrectly. I bought a Abit IC7-Max3 a while back and it ran again at 3.4ghz for a while. A while went by and I noticed that it was starting to become unstable, prime95 confirmed this. I backed it down to 3.2ghz and it seemed like it fixed it, 24hours prime stable again. Then the Max3 mysteriously died for no reason, wouldn't post anymore. I started using a IS7 that I had laying around and then I noticed that it wasn't stable at 3.2ghz anymore so I ran it at stock. I got rid of the IS7 and just got a AI7, now it doesn't seem to be stable at anything other than stock and when running at stock speeds after a few minutes of usage the system starts pausing for about half a second every other second. It's very annoying.

So, is this an indication that my processor has deteriorated beyond hope? I have a Celeron D that I plan on throwing in there to see if the symptoms persist.
 
I have 4x512mb dimms, 2 are OCZ PC4200, and the other two are Crucial PC3200. The power supply is an Antec True480
 
When I was overclocking a P4 2.6c and was using an Antec TrueBlue 480, the mobo (P4P800 Dlx) died on me. After I got a new board, I continued to use the same PSU only to find out that the +12V was reading at 10.4V in the BIOS. Once I saw this, I figured the PSU killed the mobo, and promptly junked it. Went back to an Antec True380W.

So it could be the PSU or the RAM. Did you try using only one brand of RAM at a time. Sometimes mixing RAM is not good.

I tried running each stick independently, always the same result. When I get home today I'm going to measure the voltage coming from the PSU, maybe thats it.
 
Just tested the 12v and 5v idle and underload. 5.04v and 11.96v. Anything else I can do to test the powersupply?
 
I think you answered your own question - try the Celeron and see if the problem is the system or the CPU.
 
I just swapped in the Celeron D, running Prime95 now. Lets see how this one works...
 
Got an oscope to check the ripple? Despite it holding its voltage in BIOS readings, it may be on its way out. Try a different one if you have one handy. It sounds like the psu killed all those other parts you mentioned.
 
It started doing it with the Celeron D too. So I guess I'll try swapping power supplies too. Might as well go back to the 2.4C.
 
I tried removing my Audigy 2ZS, now it seems to run for a little longer before starting to do the pausing, but it still does it. I'm going to try swapping out my Radeon 9800Pro for an old Geforce TI4200 I have laying around, see if that helps.

My IS7 did the same thing, as did my IC7-Max3 shortly before dying. If its still happening after I change out the video card and power supply, I'm selling everything and buying a Mac.
 
Check your temps?

I have an Opteron 144 on a foxconn board and it will start the pausing as you described after i hit about 50C and over, turning up the CPU fan and back 120mm usually helps for me.
 
Fans are running at max. I have a Zalman 7700CU on the CPU and another Zalman on the GPU. But the NB only has a big copper passive cooler on it.
 
I swapped out he video card, thats not the problem. I guess the powersupply is the last thing to try.
