Maybe you all know more about killed computers.
I posted this in the AMD forum:
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=883900

I just set this computer up for folding yesterday, do you think it's dead?
And please as I said there, if anyone is in the DC/N. VA area and has some hardware I can test my components with and has some free time tomorrow or over the weekend, let me know.
Or if anyone knows where I could go to test my components, that would work too.
Thanks all, I really hope it's not the CPUs.

If you can smell magic smoke out of your psu and your ups was screwed, id guess that would be your problem. Ive had dead psus before that havent taken anything out. Worst case scenario might be a new motherboard, i cant see it having taken out your cpus though.

I'm surprised that a PSU that nice had trouble running 2 242's even under full load. Hopefully someone can hook you up with a test CPU to check that part. Hopefully that is all it is.

Well, it is just the PSU, check the other forum for details.
Luckily it wasn't the folding that did it.

The good news is that PSU should have done a decent job of isolating itself from the rest of the components.

Edit: nevermind........you already got it answered...this is what happens when you just hit reply after viewing the OP.

You state in the other forum
It took me half of the day to find a computer service & repair place that
a) was open
b) serviced individual computers, not only companies
c) Knew what I was talking about when I explained my computer needed an EPS12V PSU
d) had an EPS12V PSU and other componets capable of testing my system.
e) was reasonably priced

I must have called 20-30 places before I found this one.
BUT YOU NEVER TOLD US THE PLACE!!!
Please - good legwork, but more info:)

Sorry, for others in N. VA, the place to go if you can't test yourself is:
Pro Computer Inc
(703) 941-8830
6675 Little River Tpke
Annandale, VA.

They don't have good prices on parts, but if you need something quick, they might have it.
I don't think their site is updated with their inventory either, so if planning to buy, call.

Although there are probably some other places that are better, this one definately helped me out.
The guys at the counter who took my computer didn't instill much faith, I was worried when I dropped it off.
But the tech who worked on it called me around 8:40 PM to tell me he was starting to work on it.
I wasn't expecting that since they closed at 8:00 PM.
And he definately had respect for my system, he was like so you have 1 2 3 4 5 6 hard drives in here, in a very approving tone.
I said, "Yep, 3 in raid 5, 2 in raid 0, and one for my OS."
He said, "Cool."
Then he called around 9:10 PM to say he was done and confirmed it was only the PSU, and told me how it died.
I am about to leave to pick it up.

Good to hear you got her fixed. Really should have a few rigs in the same area, to swap parts around for diagnostics. I use a cheesy little pci card to test systems that fail to post. Very informative in the case of an overclock that goes bad. Nice to know the limiting factor. Hopefully cap modding the connectors to the HD's is possible, before you take out that PSU too. I had a psu that kept popping it's breaker whenever I even slightly OC'ed one of my rigs. 7 Raptors, 2 big in RAID0, and 5 little ones in raid 5 (Hybrid RAID3, proprietary RAID XL, from Netcell), all spooling up to 10,000 RPMS puts a momentary strain on a PSU. that can blow it out if it doesn't pop a breaker. Here's a possible solution:

I was silly enough to waste a few extra bucks, and install a second PSU in my CMStacker tower. That worked fine, with 1 460Watt PSU dedicated to HD power only. Since cap modding, I've been able to move that PSU to another rig.

It did cost $30 for anyone interested.
Not bad, since they would have told me if something else had died for the same price.

Cap modding, interesting idea, but if I did that I'd assume it would void the warranty.
I guess I could get a splitter for every head and mod that, but I think PP&C PSUs are fine.
I just had a little bad wiring.
Also, normally I do have spare parts for testing, but this was an expensive computer, It wouldn't really make sense to build another s940 EPS12V system.
My next system, or maybe just for my GF, since we will be living together relatively soon, will probably be a s939 and I'll get a Powerstream PSU with the universal connection.
I still won't have anything to test the CPU's or ECC memory in though.
Maybe I should try to find a cheap s940 mobo that takes ECC memory.
Any ideas?

Looks like the cheapest on pricewatch is $174, not really a good deal just for testing, I don't expect this computer to break that often.

Harmless mod. Buffers the attempt by High RPM drives to yank the heart out of you're PSU every time you boot up. Something struck me as amusing. The word "warranty" in a [H]ardOCP post. I feel obligated to void a warranty, before bothering with a windows install. I understand you have some cash invested in you're system. 3,000 most I ever spent on a home built, and I voided the warranty as soon as the BIOS menu was available. Found a pic of Zxcs's beauty.

Now THAT's a voided warranty!

Wish I knew how to img Zxcs's rig, and sig to this thread. Dual 250 Opterons over 2800MHz, Dual Vapochills. read the sig, see the rig, get a woodie. Not the most prolific [H]orde folder, but darn impressive rig that outperforms all I got.

mainboard... OCed... no warenty
CPU... OCed... no warenty
Videocard... OCed and modded... no warenty
RAM OVolted... no warenty
Tower... cut with dremmel and dewalt.... no warenty.
Drives on controller on OCed PCI Bus.... questionable....

One blazing fast computer..... priceless.....

I don't think I've had a warenty on my main machine that wasn't voided within 24 hours. (asside from my current power supply it's a 480 ... my old sparkle 300 was doing 375 for months and is still living to talk about it. :) )

The [H]orde needs You!

Well, this is the first machine I've built that I have not overclocked.
Mainly because it was my first attempt at a dual cpu machine, and yes, I put a lot of money into it.
Not much over $3K though.
I might OC it down the road, but for now I won't void any warranties.
Well, except the video card, I bought that off a fellow [H] member and it had a modded hsf.
