Ok, I haven't really gamed much in the last while, last time I spent a lot of time gaming was a month ago getting to the end of Quake4. I started up HL2 a week ago for old time's sake, using 6.10 Cats I believe, and the game would consistently freeze during the teleport sequence in Dr Kleiner's lab. I checked the game file integrity through Steam, defragged, etc. Going to stock CPU/bus settings and running stock (for an XT) video card speeds, this continued.

When the 6.11's came out, I properly uninstalled all existing ATI software, booted in safe mode, and used the newest version of Driver Cleaner Pro, rebooted and installed the fresh 6.11's. Running my usual 450/380 (ATI Tools is 100% ducky with 450/390), it started to artifact slightly after 5-10 minutes of playing. Dropping back into XP, I dropped the speeds to 445/370, cutting back into HL2 it was fine for another 5-10 minutes. Rinse, repeat. Now I can't play for more than 2-3 minutes without major artifacting at 412/365 (stock XT speeds).

I just uninstalled all ATI software again, ran Driver Cleaner in safe mode, and installed the bare 6.11 driver. Now it freezes completely after a minute with no artifacting, at 412/365.

I'm damn sure it's not the rest of my system that's the problem. I just had it going overnight in Memtest86+ at 240MHz 2-2-2-11-1T with no errors, and I'm only running 200x11 for these tests. I have not moved my computer in a hell of a long time, so my waterblocks should not have moved. My temperatures are 32C idle cpu, 33C idle GPU, and maybe 34/36 when playing HL2 with no overclock.

Is there anything that I'm missing here? Is there anything else I can try? And no, as much as I'd love to, I don't have the coin for a system upgrade for PCI-E. Help! :(

is source the only thing that screws up?

source games are buggy as it is. I would flash it back to the pro and see if it helped

Sounds alot like mine, just before it died.
Started artifacting a bit while playing UT2K4, and it just went down hill from there. Two days later it was dead as a doornail.

The good news is it looks like the X1950pro agp is a reality, so there is still hope for tose of us who cannot afford/don't want to upgrade yet!

stealthy123, I had zero issues when playing HL2 through 2-3 times before, so this is a new thing unfortunately. I was thinking about reflashing the XT bios just in case it somehow got corrupted (has been fine for a year since flashing back to an XT). I was going to load up Quake 4 and see how that goes, but I do seem to remember [H] system reviews where a bad card only had issues with 1 game, so it might not be the be-all-end-all test that I'd like. :(

digital_exhaust, thanks a bunch for the confirmation. Of the 2.5 years that I've had this card, it's only been aircooled for a total of a month, during which time it was running the Pro bios with no overclock at all. I honestly expected more out of this card with the cooler temperatures (10°C change doubles/halves component lifetime).

Until the magic smoke fills my case, or the card starts artifacting in XP, I don't really want to give up on this card. Any other advice or experience out there?

Uninstalled 6.11 Cats, ran Driver Cleaner in safe mode, then flashed to the Pro bios, installed bare 6.11 Cats once back into XP. Without touching the speeds, I could play HL2 for 15-20 mins this time before it hard froze. I haven't had any artifacting since installing the bare 6.11 Cats, it just freezes now. Still a simple 200x11 on the rest of the system. :(

Uninstalled 6.11's, ran Driver Cleaner in safe mode, installed bare 6.3 Cats. Same as last time, played for 15-20 mins just fine, and then hard freeze. :(

Got 20 minutes of playtime in Quake 4 with the 6.3 Cats and everything at stock. Time to try it with 6.11's. :(

edit: Froze after 30 minutes with 6.11 Cats.
