is my 9800 broken?

I just ordered parts for a new system. everything works except the 9800.

Its an ATI Radeon 9800 pro 256bit 128MB. I ordered it from a place in ohio called futurePowerPC.

as soon as i boot i get visual errors. In an ASCII invironment i get weird characters all over the place.
when i get to windows blue or red lines aprear across the screen.
more lines come and go in flickers.
sometimes mouse movment spawns yet more lines that dont get overdrawn.
they seem to overlap everything. some are even translucent.

anyway, its saturday. no ati tech support. i dont imagine the probelm could be anything but bad hardware.

P.S. ive tried the card in my old system. same problem, different patterns of lines.

1 gig corsair

if you get the problems before you even get into windows its totally a hardware problem, im not sure what exactly it might be but overclocked cards can have those problems, and ones that have had dormant pipelines enabled can do that too, just have to get in contact with ATI and see
 
Plug your power supply directly into the molex connector on the back end of the radeon.
 
YES it will let you boot but you will get exactly the symptoms you describe(I would bet $5,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 that your bios screen is all garbled as well which is symptom #1 for this). Make sure you arent using the power splitter cable and you have your power supply directly plugged in and that the connector is jammed all the way in there.

If this does not work(which it WILL), reset your motherboard back to default settings. If that doesnt work check to make sure the fan is spinning on the video HSF and that you have the card pushed all the way into the slot.

If none of that works it's RMA time.

i tired what you said, but its no go.
the fan spins w/ or w/out the splitter cable so i dont think power is the issue.

also, i guess my card is different, but when i unplug the power cable the speaker goes nuts and i get a nasty message with lots of exclimation marks that basicly says read the f*** manual. :)

*sigh* i just want to play doom...
 
I feel your pain! I had to RMA my first 9800 Pro back in March 2004 as well. Looks like it's RMA time. Make sure you follow all the RMA directions at the vendors web site and write the RMA number in TWO places on the box just to make sure. Just be glad your MB is working...........I had MB problems as well. Good Luck!
