Is my 4870x2 Overkill?

So I had a thought, I game with a resolution of 1680x1050 from what I have seen reading reviews, etc at that resolution the x2 is overkill. I don't plan on moving to a higher resolution any time soon. So just curious if a single 4870 1 GB would be a better card for my use. The rig in question is in my sig and currently I could sell the x2 for the cost of a single 4870 1 GB and more then likely end up with some cash in my pocket. Just looking for some thoughts.
 
If you want to use high amounts of AA at that resolution, then it would be to your benefit to keep the x2. The edge detect AA algorithm is done with the shader processors, which means the second gpu would boost performance significantly. Also note that as games become more demanding, the extra horsepower will go a long way in keeping games playable at that resolution for a good while to come.

I play at 1600x1200 and I couldn't be happier with my 4870 x2.
 
If your not in immediate need of cash stick with it, just max all graphics and AA it to hell.
there is nothing like future proofing your PC.
 
If money IS an issue, for the single card solution, the 4870 is great, the 1gig version even better. the 4850 CF is a great dual card solution.
 
I feel like my GTX 280 is overkill at 1920x1200. With a much faster card like the 4870x2 @ 1680x1050, you should be set for gaming for a long time to come. Not a bad thing, if you ask me. You won't sell it for near what you paid for it, so enjoy it! :)
 
you should definitely get rid of it. tell you what, i'll do you a favor and get you out of this predicament you've gotten yourself into. i'll give you my 4870 + $50 for your X2.

seriously though i'm a firm believer in having too much power in lieu of too little. games like Crysis and STALKER CS still run like crap on my 4870 @ 1680x1050. you're good to go with your X2.
 
yeah... i think it is overkill at that resolution, if you need some money id sell it and get a 4870, but if you dont need the money id keep it as you know in time there will be games to give it a run for its money.
 
Nah, I'll keep the 4870x2, you'll probably end up regretting it later when newer games come out that is more demanding.
 
With games like STALKER Clear Sky and Crysis becoming more the norm, I'd say it's not overkill. Clear Sky maxed @ 1680x can drop HD 4870 1Gb Crossfire all the way down to 31FPS Avg.

It's not playable on the other cards or combos of cards linked above @ 1680x maxed.

If you're playing a less demanding game, just run stupid amount of AA.

I play 1920x here and if I want to run 4x or greater AA in some games at that res I pretty much need my X2. AoC with everything on and maxed is another example.

Agreed. You've already got a great gaming PC, why change anything unless you really need the money? It may be overkill now, but some future game might run much better on it than on a single 4870, provided ATI writes a Crossfire profile for the game.. Either way, playing all games with 16XAA is fun :p

If you need the money, maybe there's something else in the house you can sell.. Selling used computer parts is a terrible way to make money because they loose their value very quickly :)
