Is moving standoffs a bad idea?

would it be a bad idea to drill new holes for my motherboard standoffs so that i can slide my motherboard up in the case by a 2/3 of an inch?

im running in a p180b with a full atx motherboard and it barely fits... so now when i want to run crossfire and overclock both cards(keep in mind i plan on upgrading my second card to match my 3870 512MB) im going to change out the stock vga coolers for turbo'd S1's... and that wont fit... but i had the thought that if i were to slide the motherboard up so the top expansion bay of the case actually corresponds to the top pci-e slot on the motherboard that i could fit both card AND my pci tv wonder card...

what do ya think?
any pointers?:confused:

ps i posted this in the motherboards section too... just cause i didnt know who to target for this one...
 
Uh well as long as it doesnt block access to any back panel ports you need, and its actually physically possible, I dont see any problem with it.
 
Well your main problem will be your i/o panel and card slots, but no there's no reason you couldn't mount the mb anywhere in the case with sufficient space.
 
ya ill figure that part out... i think itll have some cutting involved... possibly to move that whole panel up a smidge... if theres one thing that pisses me off about this case its that the motherboard basically hugs the bottom... i think they could have made it an inch taller and made me like 30x happier... and ya even the p190 is tight like that at the bottom of the motherboard... im gonna develop the p180c i think... it will most likely have some sort of holes along the bottom of the motherboard tray to hide the cables running from the front panel of the case... arg

now that i look at it... all i really have to do is dremel the i/o panel a slot so that it can slide up as high as i need it to... my motherboard has the wifi antenna at the top of the io panel so i think if i raise it as high as i need to the antenna will be inside the case... however i removed the antec tri cools from the case so the little spot at the back where the fan controllers were plugged in at the back is currently a hole so i can feed the antenna cable through there and no big deal... its a little ghetto but i can fix up holes if need be...

I use the P180 as well... definitely zero room below the mobo. I have a sound card plugged in on the very bottom PCI slot and it almost has capacitors sitting on the case.
 
ya its stupid... i realize its a big mid tower case but its about an inch shorter than it should be... they forget to take into account that an atx motherboard is designed to have a power supply above it... so u run into issues with the 4/8-pin 12v power being barely within reach of cables... and then the expansion slots getting mashed into the bottom of the case... its incredibly crowded in there so their solution is the p190 but thats only more spacious from front to back(too much so in my opinion) but its still squeezed in top to bottom...
 
I/O panel could be a problem. Are you planning on just drilling holes. Wouldn't you have to tap and thread holes?
 
I was just looking at the p180 pictures at The Egg - wouldn't it be easier to cut out the middle of the divider between tho mobo and PSU, and file the edges of the cut-out? It looks like there's plenty of room below that divider, but you probably want to leave the edge of it intact for structural reasons.
 
i considered that but one of the things i liked about the case was that it was compartmental like that... not to mention that it seems like it would lose a good bit of structural stability of that divider were modified... i think id prefer to just move the standoffs...
 
and i was thinking... the threaded part of the standoff should stick out the other side of the motherboard tray far enough that i can get a nut on the other end... so theres really no NEED to thread my holes at all...

Sure, but I can guarantee you, unless you epoxy those nuts down, when you unscrew the motherboard, the nut will undo, and the standoff will stick to the screw you used to hold the board down :p.

Major annoyance.
 
i dont think that will happen nearly as often as u think it will...and if it does... ill glue the nuts on...whatever... or maybe(and this might be what u were saying... ill just stick the nuts to the back of the motherboard tray... u could call that poor man's tapping...:cool:

Trust me, having used nuts before, it happens *every* time.

I ended up using coldweld to epoxy the outside of the nuts. Just be careful that it doesn't get in the threads, unless you want the standoff there, for a good long while ;)
 
Why not just buy a single tap for 8-32 screws? It'd be a lot easier than epoxing nuts on the backside...
 
well if u do it... thats how u should do it then... i think im gonna epoxy some nutz... :cool:
 
Just use locktite on on the nut behind the tray, thats what its designed for. Get the strongest color(i forget the levels) and it will have more resistance than required to get the screw out of the mobo.

No good.

I/O Shield will not line up and the I/O shield acts as a ground for the I/O ports.
 
If grounding is the only negative you can easily run some wire that is hidden to ground the I/O.
