Just won a sony dsc-w5 new in box for $250 off ebay, need some memory for it now.

Magicgate work?... I know its memory stick pro also, but whats the difference between the two

MagicGate is a copy-protection technology introduced by Sony in 1999 as part of the SDMI. It works by encrypting the content on the device and using MagicGate chips in both the storage device and reader to enforce control over how files are copied.

MagicGate encryption is used in the memory cards of the PlayStation 2 and, as of 2004, has been introduced into all of Sony's Memory Stick products. Some devices, such as Sony's Network Walkman, will only accept Memory Sticks which use MagicGate technology.

In other words most if not all memory sticks should have "magicgate."

Tedium is correct, pretty much all memory stick media is magicgate now, there are some pro sticks that arent but its a hassle to find. just find the cheapest you can find 512 MB is a good start. I for some reason forgot about the whole switch to all media sticks being magicgate stick being compatable.

Congrats on the purchase , glad you finaly got a camera :)

Magicgate is a form of encryption to protect data on a storage device (devised by Sony for its memory cards and flash memory).

Memory Stick Pro status is generally given to anything over 128MB. For some reason Memory Stick maxed out at 128MB, so MS Pro was created to use 256MB and above.

MS Pro readers can read regular MS media. And it can read Magicgate media too.

My sony laptop has problems reading other memory sticks other than sony's. If you use a universal card reader, then you will be fine.
