Clubit screwed up an order and I have all my Quad core parts sans a case...

Is it wrong to just set it up on a wood table on a piece of card board with the static plastic it came in and start folding while I wait on the case to come in?

I'm not very happy that my case which I ordered well in advance of my system is not here!

Take the risk? Eh its not much of one... since I don't have kids etc...

Just really wish it had its new home to fold :)

No it's not wrong, you can even just run it bare on top of the wood... No risk there, at least you will have your cpu/mobo all ready for installation when the cases comes in.
 
Its more of a sin to not run it! All else fails get pizza tonight and put it in the pizza box! Papa Johns is preferred unless you have a local place you like better!
 
I fold naked when I can.

Be careful about what gets hot. ie., don't melt anything.

Dont use the anti-static bag it came in.
That conducts electricity and will short out the back of the mobo.
Just sit it on the mobo box.
I've one sitting on a mobo box atm, waiting for my next day off before I start moving the farm around.

Thats what I thought too when I saw the static plastic. I would forgo that part like people said and just use the wooden table or cardboard like people said.

Edit: I ran my E2160 naked for over a week using a screwdriver to turn it on/off during OC testing and burn in.
 
Well its solid as a rock at 3.6ghz at 1.385v in bios.. This puppy is a 4ghz processor if I wanted to push 1.45v, but I'm not one to push! So onward to installing the clients! Wahahaha another 4.5k PPD :)

Nice clocks, I just received a Q6600 in today too...
But mine clocks not nearly as good. I had nasty suspicion
when a got the box in, retail cpu, vid core 1.325 volts imprinted on box.
The other one I have read 1.215 vid and overclocks like a mofo.
This one is struggling to make 3.2Ghz. Got it newegg, G0 stepping but
not good results. BTW what vid was your cpu rated at?

In general, do not attempt to return the CPU if you are thinking because it doesn't OC. It does runs at its rated speed superbly well. But yeah I feel ya and my vid for the C2Q I have is 1.2875 and I'm able to run it at 3.6Ghz, mileage may vary for you.

 
Mine was batch 745, which is known to be a good batch, and is 1.225 vid.. not a great vid, but it really is staying very cool with the TRUE HSF!! I hit 54c max at 1.385v and 3.6ghz...

I've let the SMP's run for a bit and its going to produce 4.5k + just a hair over So I'm very happy with the new setup.

1.) When the parts come in you must place them in whatever configuration that may immediately start folding.

2.)If necessary add mojo and Papa John's cardboard.

3.) When in doubt....buy mo' boxen and goto 1.


To clarify:
When in doubt...buy more boxen...and fold you biatches.

Ya, it's sad. They bitch and moan if UPS is a day late but then it takes them more then 20 min or so to be folding...........youth, what can you say;):p

We used to fold with our VCRs. (see if you young 'uns can find pherret's VCR PC) Now they need "cases". Hell my original farm was living in Papa John's boxes.


Kid's these days. Sheesh
 
Cardboard?

This old man is afraid of setting the cardboard on fire. My naked boxen heat up whatever they are sitting on.
 
LOL i hope it won't set the cardboard on fire... I have it at about 50c and it might hit 55c today... Do I need to be concerend about it? LOL hope not... thank goodness I have insurance.

naked cases are fun, just make sure your wall outlets have a good ground and the mojo doesn't get to close.

Sorry, I get the system setup and overclock the piss out of it first. Then I stress test it. After that I install the OS and start folding. :p

I stressed tested for an hour temps never climbed above 55c and no errors, I installed 2xSMP and monitored it over night no issues, Temp max was 52c. /shrug sounds likes its working to me :) Was still chug'n strong this morning no issues!

Should be turning in two units before I get off work...
 
3 UPS's and my Centurion 3 case arrives today!!

So finally I will have these puppies on battery backup and my naked Q6600 will finally get a home!

Ahh fun project for the weekend is moving all of this into my HUGE walk in closet. I have a 600 Sqft condo.. and the walk in closet is literally like 12x12.

I think I'm going to hit Radio Shack for a Ambient Thermometer with log'n so I can monitor the need for air circulation. I intend on leaving the closet doors open, but may need to invest in a couple of quiet box fans.

Also any suggestion on how to label the computers? Physical label them that is. Post-it with a Fat Sharpie? I have a KVM coming in shortly for 1 to 4 so that I can quickly check all my boxes... This hopefully will be supplemented by remote access in the future, but until I figure that out this will have to do.

I have nice shelving already in the closet as to keep them off the floor. Any other suggestions for the Closet Data Center? hehehehe Sorry no Haylon(sp) hehehehe Although it does have a Wet Fire suppresion system in there, just in case! :)

 
Mine get their names and switch port number (1-10) stuck to a visible part of the computer.
The names also get stuck on the power cord, vid cable & lan cable.
It makes it easy to track down what goes where when rebuilding to farm.

Ahh good idea. I also invested in a kill-a-watt unit to see what I am pulling amps wise and such... I've been guessing but now I'll know :)



 
I used a label maker to label the name (ie Boxen 1, Boxen 2) and also the cpu (ie E2180, E6400).

Which KVM are you gettin? i've been looking for a good decent priced one to monitor the 3 boxen i have running in the garage.

From mono price of course it was $40, I invested in a 10 foot vga cable as well to work with my monitor and since it comes with all the cables you just need a mouse and keyboard.

Comes in Wednesday I'll tell you how it works then :)

Yeah, that's what I thought when I ordered one close to a month ago. I did take it out of the package but I have yet to use it. I just can't stand the thought of the wasted time to power down the system, unplug the cord, plug in the Kill A Watt, plug the cord back in and then boot up.

Sad thing is that I've been working on a couple of the systems lately and had them powered down yet didn't try the Kill A Watt. Never seem to think about it when the system is down for another reason.

 
Well for me it is a perfect time.. I have two ups to install and with them I have the chance to plug them in and use the killawatt... Get a solid reading of what each system is pulling.

Negative side is I will have to power things down one more time to remove the device.
