I currently have an Abit IC7-G revision 1 board, 2.4C, Herc 9800 Pro 128 meg and 1 gig Corsair Platinum XMS 3200 ram.

Unfortunately, I was never able to stably OC the rig since those sons of bitches at Abit decided to screw over the features on the board, ie VERY bad volt regulation for the ram, undervolting problems, and a lieu of other issues that could only be solved by either sending my board to Abit for 3-6 weeks or getting a new board.

With that said, Im wanting a new system.

Im looking at building a fairly top of the line rig, with a Sledgehammer FX-53 or maybe a FX55 AMD 64 939 pin, and a pci-express compatible mobo with GOOD FEATURES and great overclocking potential.

Is it worth putting together a brand new system now? Im not suffering at any rate with my current setup, and waiting 6-9 months would be fine if something significantly better is around the corner.

Opinions are welcome, would love to know before I drop 2 grand or so on parts from newegg.
 
It really depends on how you look at it I think. You've got the whole "Dual Core" thing coming up soon, but theres a lot of questions on whether that will really make any difference as far as gaming goes, with some people thinking they may even perform worse (if each core in the dual core is slower than the single cores of today, something that is very likely). Theres always DDR2 with AMD, but geez 2-2-2-5 with a slight bump up from DDR400 is fast as hell anyway. I guess the way it goes is there will always be something better around the corner, whether its worth waiting is never a real cut and dry question it seems.

Yah, I know. There is always something better around the corner, but, just trying to figure out of I can "future proof" gaming wise for maybe a year or so.
 
if you're willing to wait 6-9 months....amd dual cores should be out then (currently projected in the second half of 2005) especially if you're will to drop cash on an FX chip (IMO i don't think an FX chip is needed unless you have money to burn). but like pr0zac mentioned, games will probably not take advantage of dual core proc.
 
Would it even be worth it to just upgrade the video card on my current rig? Like a 6800 GT?

Considering the board is completely borked and wont allow stable OC even at 3.0ghz on my 2.4c because of faulty volt regulation and no VCC for the memory, would I simply be wasting my time and money?
