Is it worth upgrading from E6700 to E8400

With the current prices on the E8400, I can upgrade from my current E6700 to the E8400 for a difference of around $100-$120 after selling the old processor. My current processor is at stock speed and I would also run the E8400 at stock. Would it be worth the upgrade? I primarily use the system for gaming and home theater. Also, would by current PSU be sufficient? My understanding is the E8400 uses similar to slightly less power than the E6700?

Here are my current specs:

Asus P5B motherboard
Core2Duo E6700 2.67 GHz
4x1 GB OCZ Platinum PC2-6400 DDR2
Galaxy 512 MB 8800GT
Enermax Liberty 500 W
500 GB, 120 GB, 120 GB internal HDD
500 GB, 250 GB USB2 HDD
2 DVD-RW drives
 
In short, no, because you aren't overclocking. The extra 333MHz isn't going to make much of a difference as your E6700 is more than powerful enough for any game. As far as power draw goes, it doesn't seem like you're fanatical about getting the most power efficient system, so again it probably isn't worth it.
 
Just overclock your system to 3Ghz and you'll have that upgrade for free.

Drop the multiplier to 9x, raise the FSB to 333, make sure your ram is at correct ratio 6:5 (for ddr2 800 @ spec). And you'll have an e6850 for free (same basic thing as the e8400).

Everything will basically be with in spec. (FSB, ram, etc) Just your CPU is SLIGHTLY overclocked.
 
I am not interested in messing with overclocking basically because I've had too many stability problems with trying that in the past and because I am using this as a HTPC as well as gaming rig, stability matters more than some extra performance.
 
An overclock need not be unstable if you're not trying to push the chip to its limits; I've not had any problems with my Q6600 at a 25% overclock.

But regardless, you're unlikely to see noticeable improvements; your CPU isn't likely to be holding back current games by any significant degree. Power consumption would probably be reduced slightly.
 
my q6600 stock, and 8800 gtx, got me like 70-150 fps in a css deathmatch, but once i oc'd to 3.0, which was super easy and i could go further, but 3.0 is perfect, dont have to worry about it being unstable or any of that. but once i got it to 3.0, i was then getting 120-300 fps in that same css deathmatch, the quad at 2.4 sucks. must oc.
 
If you are about running it at stock speeds, it doesn't worth a 30$ upgrade. I honestly would advice you to get a e8400 @ 3.8 @ stock volt. I'm pretty sure that it'll cause no stability problem to your system.
The gain with this overclock will be impressive.

Not if he's using it for gaming and for his home theater as he indicates in his first post.
E6700 is more than enough CPU for those tasks.
 
A well tested overclocked machine is often MORE stable than stock noob's machines. B/c we thoroughly Orthos/Prime test our machines for worst case scenarios. (100% load for 24 hours straight)

My machines are always perfectly stable b/c I test them properly, have proper cooling, and adequate power supplies.

The overclock I suggested will be stable.
You're at a stock FSB (333), your memory will be at stock speeds ddr2 800, the only thing you'll be overclocking is your CPU a MEASLY 12.5%.
 
Would I have to raise the VCORE voltage to make that work or leave it at stock? I am also tentative on overclocking because I think I may be running the PSU I have close to its upper limit with the current config.
 
Depends on your chip. You should be able to do it with approx. stock voltage. IF you leave it on Auto it shoud be enough. Try running Orthos, if its not stable you can raise the voltage a notch at a time until it is. OR if it takes too much voltage just go back to stock. But you don't know unless you try it.

With this mild overclock you're not taking any big risks.

Your ram is stock, etc.. so you should have nothing to worry about.

a 500W Enermax should be fine for your system.
 
I tried it and am running Orthos dual core version. With VCORE set at auto, the VCORE in Speedfan is reporting at a constant 1.33. The load temperature is reporting at 67 C (in Speedfan; I am using Vista x64 so can't run CoreTemp or Intel TAT).

And..... ? Easy right?

You might even be able to reduce your voltage so you can run cooler.

Check to see if everything is stable for 12-24 hours with Orthos first, then you can decide what you want to do from there.

Use HardwareMonitor for temps, voltage, etc.. it works with Vista and is accurate. Speedfan temps are off.
