I was reading this somewhere in the forum about this but cannot find it. Is it worth the extra $180 to $200 to go from a DIAMOND 4870PE51G (1gb) to Diamond 4870X2PE52G (2bg) HD 4870?
 
Res is at 1680 x 1050 and looking to play the new GTA coming out soon, Crysis + Warhead, Pure, COD 4, FEAR, and anything high res. I also heard that a new Direct X is coming out (11, I believe).
 
but remember not everyone builds to upgrade every 6months to a year. some people build for the long term. now there are cards that the memory is overkill for it.

I love people that put out these fallacies. I game at 1680 x 1050 and I can tell you...


...depending on the game and/or use of AA....you will need more than 512 MB with a high-end graphics card. I've measured the VRAM usage in Crysis with no AA HIGH with some very high effects and it will go over 630 MB.


Also, Multi-GPU solutions do scale well @ 1680 X 1050. I've had SLI...I know it for a fact.

With these new games coming out, if you're going to buy a mid-high end card and run with high settings and AA, you need more than 512 MB of VRAM. Period.
 
The video card itself will be outdated before the 1GB memory anywhoo... "Futureproofing" is a [harhar], when a card fails to perform all spin-offs of it go down with it; remember the GTS 320/640?

And I can tell you that 512 is perfectly suitable and capable. Aside from some (coughcrysis) nitpickyshit titles, the extra 512 doesn't do much. I've mentioned this before, currently $200 for 512, $270 for 1GB both at its lowest. If it were closer (like when it only was a $30 premium) then yea sure, go blow the cash, but at a 35% premium?

When did SLI/Crossfire become part of the discussion?
