i have a sapphire 9800pro 256mb, the one with ddr2 so i cant mod it to a 9800xt. but i CAN mod it to a fireGL. is it worth doing this, will i see any improvement. i read a few review and it does score significantly better in spec view and cad type stuff but i dont really do that kind of stuff so is it worth to do this at all?

Speaking from experience, a softmod to XT will gain around 300 3dmarks.
The thermal diode was more important to me.
Flashing to a fireGL won't do anything for you if you just use if for games.

If you can run your game with a playable setting that is acceptable to you, then don't mess around with the bios. I've broken quite a few things. Only do this if you are certain that you can fix it just in case.

people, its flashing a bios, not brain surgery, go for the XT mod, the firegl isnt worth it unless you work with 3D ediiting tools

i cant do the xt mod, my card is a ddr2 card and it cannot be modded.

what are the differences between the firegl and the radeon 9800?

the fireGL is a card similar to the nvidia quaddro (or quattro or something), and is specially designed to use with rendering programs like Maya etc.

I doubt flashing it to a fireGL will do anything for the performance, since they run at exactly the same speeds and have exactly the same specs. In fact, the regular 9800Pro BIOS might have better gaming performance.

I would say just oc it to improve things. With 256mb of ddr2 you should have some headroom.

the regular 9800 will have better gaming performance, but the firegl has HUGE cad improvements.

it doesnt overclock as well as i hoped, the core tops out at about 413mhz, and the memory at about 378mhz.

Really? I have a 9800 Pro (recently turned XT) that gets to 441/388.8 with a VGA Silencer. If you get one of those, it will do you tons better than the POS Stock coolers that the Pros are notorious for. I think newegg has them for 15 or 16 dollars.

cooling is not the problem, the card uses ddr2 which doesnt overclock well, and it uses the r350 core which doesnt overclock well either.

Does it oc differently with each BIOS?

And are you going to use it for CAD? You didn't mention it before, so i didn't really take that into account.

im not going to do the mod, i wont ever use a cad program. and i think i might have drivers trouble if i did the mod.
