Is it worth $60

Go with the Black edition 5000+ it has unlocked multipliers.

If you're overclocking you may as well just grab the 5000+ BE.

I'd grab the 6400+. To me the guaranteed 3.2 is better than rolling the dice.

I've always said buy the most clockspeed you can OCing is just a plus.

In my opinion though it doesn't make much sense to put that much into the AM2 platform though. Much better idea to go C2D.

I have to agree with ya but I'm not going to tell the guy what to buy. Beyond what he has asked.

like myself, i will stick with AMD. I am not a fanboy that's gonna say INtel sucks, etc etc.

If the OP wants to get AMD, i will fully support that decision.

I think the 5000+ is a better investment at this time. It can defniitely OC to 3ghz. 6400+ will end up faster and OC higher....but with B3 Phenoms coming, why not go with 5k+ for now and then a Phenom (or even tricore) later?

are you upgrading your existing CPU? what you running now? or this a new build?

the 5000 Black Edition is a 65w and the X2 6400 is a 125w. this along with what you are going to be using it for, will help you decide if you want 512k or 1m per core. then you can pick your trade off.

since you have ruled out a C2D then the BE would be my personal choice between these 2. being an unlocked CPU, you will be able to get things dialed in and balance power to clock. but i do not know what kind of apps or use you have planned.

other hardware should also be considered. ie. you gonna game? what video card you have or getting, and what games? if you are playing stuff that is GPU limited then the the 5000 and spend the "extra" on your V-card,

The 6400 will overclock better because its a windsor.

Personaly Id just pick up a lower end brisbane and call it a day. Ive done a few dozen brisbane builds in the past year and all of them have topped out within 200mhz of each other(2.8-3.0). Ive used numerous 3600s and 3800s, 4000,4200,4800s, and a couple Black Editions. Ive used multiple motherboard with air and water cooling and the 3.0ghz range seems to be the limit for them. For me, the only reason to justify buying the black edition would be that maybe the BE Label will help resell value down the road.

The 6400+ is crazy delicious. Managed 3.5 stable for 16 hours on orthos. Also got me the #3 spot on overclock Top 40 3dmark AMD scores. Toped only but dual FX-74s.
Checked my screenshot frequency was at 3456 and orthos ran for 13 hours. Temps stayed below 40C. HT link was at stock and so were mem timings.

I think newer 6400+ that are coming out should be 89w, it mite be hit and miss however, especially from newegg. I don't think it matters much, just means your going to have to crank the voltages up the same, maybe have a bit more headroom.

I would go with the 6400+ for the cache and the overclockability.

I would rather have the hot 90nm chips isntead, more l2, the l2 they have is faster, and if its already at 3.2 its going to be about as fast as a 65nm one at 3.3 or 3.4.
