I have a ati 4870 x2. I was wondering if I should buy another one on ebay (about $250) or sell it and try to find a 5970. Is direct11 going to make a big difference visually, I know I'm not going to use eyeinfinity so that not important. Like to know what everybody thinks.

I sold my HD 4870 X2 and got a 1GB HD4870 for the half of the price of my HD 4870 X2 while waiting for the HD5870 2GB to come out with a lower price...

I'm with alg7, sell it and get a cheap card that won't devalue much till the 2GB 5870's are available and then pickup 2 for X-fire eventually

No idea if your sig is what you are running, but a 24" monitor definitely does not need another 4870 x2 and surely doesnt need a 5970. If you are running a 30" or need a bigger epeen, then step it up.

If you want to sell it, you already know what the ebay prices are, so that would be where I start my pricing at.

Well first of all what system are you going to put it in? I'm assuming not the rig in your signature since it shows 2x 5870 already? You better have a beefy power-supply for two 4870x2's (each one consumes just as much if not more than a 5970)

I was in a similar situation, coming from 4850's in crossfire and was looking at a 5870 or 5970. I went with the dual 4870x2's (got a great price) and it's been a great experience so far. I was actually surprised how many games not only worked with quad crossfire but worked quite well including even some 5+ year old games that you would never expect. And when something scales, it really does scale... When you compare that to a typical 5970 GPU score of about 21k that is pretty insane.

Pretty much the only downsides are the ridiculous power consumption and insane heat output. So much heat that I can almost burn my finger just touching any part of my metal case near the exhaust of the cards. And when the 4870x2's are both at 100% Fan it is just as loud as the 150CFM Delta Fan I have inside my Tuniq Tower.

To be honest I am very happy with my 5970. I love AVIVO color correction compared to digital vibrance.

Now the only "true" DirectX 11 game I have played so far is alien vs predator. I do exhibit the stuttering issue in the club stage. But I did switch from DirectX 9 to DirectX 11 to compare. It's nice overall and a good improvment over DirectX 9. Just waiting for rebellion to have the stuttering issue fixed so I can replay the game again

But overall it's money well spent. I won't be upgrading anytime soon, I can play all my DirectX 9 games fine also Battlefield Bad Company 2 is coming out next week. I can't wait to see how that game runs in DirectX 11.

I'm building another rig for my son.He's using my Sony FW900 until he can get a 30" the cpu is water cooled as well as my old 4870x2, I would water cool the new card as well. I guess my main concern is how well quad would scale, if it would be worth the $200 or so.

PS: The CPU,motherboard and memory would go into his system, my system got a upgrade awile back so the sig's not accurate, I use the Sony fw900 to game on, and I have no idea what a epeen is please explain.

$250 ?

Just sell yours and buy a 5870 1gig. Dual 5870s perform better in 99% of benchmarks than a 5970 . Yea you have two cards but you will get better performance.
