It's risky doing anything while the comp is running. I read a post here somewhere where a guy shorted his board when messing with his fans while the system was on.
 
on my KV8pro, if I take out the AUX1 fan, it freezes.
Any other fans work with connecting/disconnecting, inc. CPU fan. Strange stuff.

I've messed with fan stuff. On my old ECS K7S5A, I would add pins/needles to the only fan header to make a ghettomod and attack a second fan (held by the graphics chip via some balsa-wood ghettoness!). Never had any problems.

But be careful anyway.

I would NEVER plug/unplug anything into or out of a motherboard while it's on.

On the other hand I plug/unplug fans off of the PSU all day long without problems. Just watch your fingers...startles you more than anything else. :D
 
Yes, it's fine. You'd have to have a real POS, old busted ass board for it to do any harm. Just don't short the pins or you will lose that header along with the trace all the way to the nearest component in a quick zap. I did that once with tweezers, trying to plug in a fan in a cramped spot.
 
Technically there shouldn't be a problem with most modern day equipement. BUT there is still a chance of a surge in the power or a sudden change in power that can cause damage. Why risk it anyways?

ditto. once I my finger entered the 7000rpm HSF fan on accident. I'll never tocuh my fans while my box is on ever again... It ripped off 4 fins on the fan and bloddied my finger.. :(
 
One time I was plugging in a 3 pin fan to the mobo....lol bad idea. It was as older abit ai7 and I guess what happened might have been that i didn't stick it in right and the comp reset and I saw an arch. It restarted itself and booted right back up. I was like wtf just happened. The next day I took the board out to see what had happened to it. One of the traces going to the 3 pin header got fried and I peeled it off a little and trimmed it. That was about 4 months ago. Since then it's been in my moms work machine at her office running like a champ. Hehe. oops.
 
Use a fan controller and turn off that channel, plug the fan in and turn it on. No problem doing that, but I would never remove anything from a running motherboard except USB/Firewire devices.
 
i have seen two power supplys blow when someone pluged in or unpluged power from something in the computer.

one time the guy had his head in the case to see because he couldn't get the floppy power in right. when he pluged it in it shot sparks and blue flame from the powersupply. scared the shit out of him, and he learned his lesson.

from then on this guy was allways scared to get shocked. when ever he would be plugging things in i would yell BZZZZZT and he would jump everytime. shit like that never gets old.

:D :D ahahahahahahahahahaha what a dope he must've been...

what do you think blew up his psu? usually when you plug the drive's molex in backwards, it fries the drive, not the psu...
 
I fried the Q-fan circuitry on a Socket A Asus while playing with fans while running. Board still worked fine, but only 1 fan header was left working (without q fan working). I believe I just put too much draw on the fets that run it, but harsh on and off couldn't have helped.
 
tried once, unless you have a steady hands, don't do it!

when i plugged in the molex, it seems that not all pins went in together, caused the minor short circuit. the PSU automatically cut off all power. so i just power the main off for few minutes and on it back...

this was on my friend's PC :D
 
ive done it on older computers that i dont really care too much about, but i would never take my chances on a newer or expensive comp.
 
I know a guy who plugged a floppy drive in and was off by one pin. When he turned on the comp the cable actually glowed bright orange before it blew his PSU and the floppy controller on the mobo.

sounds like it wasn't the floppy that was the problem... otherwise it would've just done a fourth-of-july from the floppy drive. that sounds to me like a case of pwsbps





(pwsbps = problem with seriously bad power supply)
