... or why is BOINC get me thinking that GPU crunching is a bit boring and CPU crunching is actually more fun. Yes, GPU get more done; more points etc. But CPU is more flexible (still) and variety of projectsand more to tweak. One can play more with it. Some little voice in my brain constantly say: replace your GPUs with 2P system ...

I know how you feel. There's definitely more variety and fun to cpu projects although gpu projects normally allow more flexibility at startup to optimise for maximum output.

Besides this thoughts against gpus are:

  1. Unless you use power optimisation settings (a la pututu) they're incredibly power hungry,
  2. They're expensive and seem to become 'yesterday's news' more quickly than cpus. I'm running a 7+ year old opteron build to reasonable effect but can't imagine that a 7 year old gpu would be all that effective.

Thoughts in favour of gpus are:

  1. The team overall is more weighted to cpu. If we are to do well next year in competitions we're going to need more gpu firepower.
  2. More and more projects are likely to introduce gpu crunching. I don't often have the honour to pass fastgeek on a project and yet did so in a matter of a couple of days earlier this year when Enigma introduced gpus to the project.
So, in summary. Keep the gpu and get the 2p as well :D

And buy another GPU to keep the other one company. lol

power lines, I need better power lines if I listen to you guys ... I don't have better power lines ... or I can use alternate; this week CPU, next week GPU, rinse and repeat ... I wish I could use some of the VBlock or SAP HANA nodes we have in the company ...

I hear solar prices are coming down..... lol

Im a rookie but only cpu crunch. Its pricey to run my 980ti or 1080ti. Plus 2p systems are just fun to nerd out on lol, theres something cool about seeing multiple heatsinks on a motherboard.

Concerned with power you should discuss power options with pututu. He knows how to get the best out of high end GPUs while keeping their power consumption relatively low.
