Is it due to my Hard disk

I m having a few problems in my system and i believe they relate to my hard disk.

1. Firstly when i try to open multiple programs simulatenously like Outlook, MSN messenger and Internet Explorer etc then my system quite frequently get hanged... With nothing happening and disk activity showing that it is working full time... But the cursor movement and keyboard doesn't respond... It specially happened if i do it right after logging in and doesn;t give enough time to the system to load all the system tray program.

2. Secondly my system booting time is pretty slow. Especially it takes a lot of time when below the windows logo 3 lines in blue or green and moving thru the rectangle. it takes approximately 45sec - 1 mins from pressing the power on button to windows login screen

3. Very rarely system at the POST screen doesn;t detect hard disk.. But it is very rare.

Because of these problem i personally feel that the hard disk the culprit for the slow and hanging system. So is there any program which can detect such hard drive errors.? or benchmark which can tell me if the hard disk is functioning properly.

My system specs are as follow
P4 2.8C
MSI 865 PE Neo2 Board.
2 x 256 MB DDR 400
Seagate 80 GB SATA
Geforce 4 Ti 4200 128 MB
CD ROM
DVD RW +/- DL

Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

1) Download the Seagate Diagnostic tools and check the disk for problems.

2) Try a different SATA cable.

3) Try a different SATA slot.

try uninstalling the SATA and IDE channels from Device manager and rebooting, letting XP "find" them again.

If that doesn't work, then try reinstalling your chipset drivers.

Sorry its Maxtor Hard drive..
Does maxtor also have a disk Diagnostic tool.?

Thanks for the help

I checked the Maxtor site and they don;t have any such utility .. there is one but it requires a floppy... i thought floppy is gone and out but seems like big organizations need time to change the way they do things.

Btw is there any general utility for drive checking.? or should i use any benchmark test to see the performance.

Thanks

Indeed.

But who doesn't have a floppy stashed in their closet?

And I think you're just impatient. 45 seconds to a minute was unheard of five years ago. 90 seconds was screaming, two minutes was doing great, and three was average. I would hate to see what you did back then. :)
