i have a 5 yrs old pc with 256mb ram but i dont know if it is DDR or SDR coz the installation procedure is same....how can i differ between them...

If it's five years old there's pretty good odds that it's SDRAM instead of DDR SDRAM...pretty sure DDR was first available in late 2000. At the least it may have limited compatability so you might want to look up your motherboard before you get any new hardware for it.

how fast is the processor..

i doubt that its DDR though.. even with ddr out around then.. rdram had its hold on the balls of intel, and amd didnt go ddr mainstream for a while.

how many notches does the ram have on the part that plugs into the mobo?

edit: lithium is probably right :D
