i would first like to thank all those willing to read this thread.

to explain the problem, a friend of mine has a roughly 2 year old dell dimension 4500.
the problem is that the computer worked fine before, but now when he tries to turn on his computer, the computer will get power, but the fans (in the power supply?) do not come on anymore, and there will be no signal sent to the monitor.

my assumption is that it may be his power supply. but i'm not sure if that explains the signal not getting to the monitor.

i would appreciate all help you can give me because i don't want my friend to roll into like compusa or bestbuy and spend a fortune to get his comp fixed if it can be fixed relatively easily.

Have you considered trying a different video card and testing a few of the rails with a multimeter?
 
i can't tell you very much about the computer yet because my buddy just emailed me about it and didn't really have specifics. from what i understand, the power light still comes on, but there is no output to the monitor. also i'm not sure if there is a video card or integrated graphics, because the other thing i was thinking of was that his integrated graphics set is out. but that also doesn't explain why the fan went out. i also think that this model of dimension only has the fan on the power supply. i'm going to my cousin's house today and see if his his fanless save the power supply because his computer is about the same model.

i thank you guys for your help, and if you could also tell me what kind of other problems these symptoms may be connected to? i really appreciate the help.
 
It could be memory-related. One by one, take out a stick of RAM, then firmly re-insert it. If this doesn't work, start removing RAM one by one and see if that solves the problem. Still, I'll need more details.

DON'T buy just any power supply if you and him are going to try replacing that. The Dell Dimension 4500 and many other Dells have ATX power supplies with incompatible wiring. You need a supply specifically wired for Dell computers.
 
It's the PSU thats going i had bad ones with Dell before, i stopped buying their systems. Their PSU'S die pretty quick :(
 
we're definitely not buying anything yet, i'm still trying to diagnose the problem, and i do know that some dell comps have incompatible psu's, so i'll be checking that out when i can actually see the thing. also, if it is the ram, how would that relate to the fan going out? plus i think his comp only has one stick of ram in it. still no specifics yet. i'll tell you guys when i get them. if it turns out to be the integrated graphics, could i just put in an agp card (if he has an agp slot) or a pci card and get it to run without hitch? or would i have to somehow disable the integrated graphics on the mb to make it run properly.

also, exabyte, have you had something similar to this happen to you before?

bad PSU can't supply power to the mobo and all add-on cards (such as vid card) - thus no sugnal to the monitor.. seems kinda obvious, doesn't it..?
