Is hypertheading worth it?

The new dual core intel cpus dont have ht =(

They won't need it. In fact they should outperform a HT CPU by having to fully functional CPU's.

As it was pointed out that could be something that differentiates Xeon's from the Pentium line.

yeah.. but with HT on both cores they could outperform a dually, right?

Haha, so technically, one could have a 2-socketed board, with 2 dual-cored HT processors...

8 processors?!

That is how intel displayed a 4 way cpu with 16 logical processors. I still say that intel has way too many heat issues to deal with...AMD dual core will be the bizzomb.....cause both cores will be really low latency..with integrated mem controllers. However, I personally feel that AMD should offer solutions that have separate memory banks for each core. 2x dual chan, or quad chan memory. Throw in some SLI and you are looking at a freakin MONSTER of a machine!

I can see that... but losing SMT and gaining SMP, where is the loss? SMP + SMT would be awesome, agreed, but losing an attempt at SMP-alike performance for true single chip SMP... that doesn't bother me one little bit.

I agree

I think HT is what saved the P4 processor.... its really its only attractive feature... I mean, hell.. its why I bought a P4 this time around...

Well I don't think they're going to go dual core with the netburst/p4 architecture. Pentium M baby! The pentium 4 is a dead end road.

IBM offers hyperthreading on the power 5 i believe, so it wouldn't be too wacky to see it on a dual core Pentium M architecture.

According to the Inq and a few other sites, the P4 is going dual core. Speeds of 2.8, 3.0 and 3.2 GHz.

Now is this 3.2Ghz per core?

Or

3.2Ghz Chip (1.6Ghz per core)

Thanks

3.2GHz per core.

AMD is doing pretty much the same thing: dual core chips will run a few speed grades lower than the top speed single core chips.

right now i have a 2.4ghz 533fsb p4 without ht

im constantly having 15-25 ie windows, aim with a bunch of conversations going, outlook express, winamp, a bunch of pings, 5-10 folders open, and a slew of other programs and processes and tray stuff and whatnot

so normally, id be seeing ~400-500mb of ram/page used

then, sometimes i take breaks from "work" which is what i call everything i have open, and id go into a game like gta or something. meanwhile, id have all these windows remain open

it would be sluggish getting into the game, but once in, it would be fairly ok.

manipulating around the windows sometimes gets a little laggy

i know for a fact that ht is exactly what im needing

BUT, how much better would say a 2.8e overclocked to say 3.4ghz (hopefully) be compared to say a 90nm amd64 clocked at 2.4ghz?

thanks!

I would take a P4 HT anyday over an Athlon 64 or FX and this is the reason

Athlon 64 / FX Rocks the pants off gaming...
OR
Athlon 64 / FX Rules when doing 1 CPU intensive thing at a time

But I like to use my computer... not let something run (ex. Rip a dvd) and sit back and watch TV...
__ __ __ __ __ __

Now my P4 with HT
It is great in everything, including gaming. It may not be the absolute fastest, but if you have a good / great video card you are not going to notice that much anyway.

Now I can do everything I do all at the same time if I wanted to... I can rip a DVD, chat, surf multiple IE windows, listen to music, have outlook open, all at the same time and my computrers is just as smooth as when i came off a reboot.

Thats why I choose my P4 HT

Lastly,
I owned a P4 1.5Ghz Williamette back in the day and let me tell you it was a POS
The P4 w/ HT has came along way....

Just for contrast, I encode while surfing or watching a movie on a daily basis on an XP 2100+ @ 2GHz. Not a problem. It may not be as smooth as a HT P4, but I have no complaints.

Is HT worth it? You betcha!
