Google is building a floating data center? That's actually a pretty damn cool idea if this turns out to be true. What do you guys think it is?

Something big and mysterious is rising from a floating barge at the end of Treasure Island, a former Navy base in the middle of San Francisco Bay. And Google's fingerprints are all over it. It's unclear what's inside the structure, which stands about four stories high and was made with a series of modern cargo containers. The same goes for when it will be unveiled, but the big tease has already begun. Locals refer to it as the secret project.

If they attach tide bouys to it they could possibly generate all the power necessary just from the motion in the ocean.

IMHO this is a proven power source we are not fully taking advantage of.

Highly doubtful that a data center the size of a barge could be powered by wave energy scavenging

Tax shelter of some sort. Make Republic of Google at sea, incorporate there, and pay that countries taxes.

Perhaps Google should focus on improving their sad excuse for products (G+, Google Apps, Google Voice) rather than focusing on interesting ways to build a datacenter. Product Development seems to be an afterthought there as of late.

SOON.

couple of offshore windmills, a data connection, cooling provided by the ocean, and then you might have a completely unregulated chunk of the internet.

It will be regulated by Google. I don't know why people think governments are especially spooky but corporations are "free."

Government is the expression of the poor banding together to impose their will on the rich.

Corporation is the expression of the rich banding together to impose their will on the poor.

Which one seems more spooky generally hinges on the magnitude of the observers bank account.

They are powering coastal towns with them in a few areas. Don't see why not.

Even if it just supplemented shore power, it could definitely help.

The switch center for a new Google Internet city? Mass production of a standardized center would reduce infrastructure costs greatly and could be used on inland waterways with a permanent mooring.

I know what it is. A google drive storage facility. You may think floating means floating on water, but it will actually float in mid air. Think "cloud storage that's actually in the clouds". They are just building in the water.
