Is GeForce 6600 SLI (nonGT, total 512MB memory) worth the money?

Here are some GeForce 6600 standard version (256MB,taiwan maker's) in the osaka computer market sell for $108

my friend want to change for a new videocard

what about GeForce 6600 SLI for $200 around

how about comparing to 6800 , 6800LE ,9800XT ,and 6600GT (all of them around $200)

Depends on whether or not his current board is SLI or not. The 6600 SLI and 6600 are similar in performance, but the SLI uses PCI x16 technology and the regular 6600 uses AGP technology (usually x8). These are two different slots configurations on a Motherboard and your MB has one or the other.

I would imagine his current board is an AGP board and the current consensus is that the 6600GT is the best bang for your buck at the 180-200$ price point. For a little more money ~300$ you can get a 6800GT ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130203) which is fantastic and should be future proof for 2 years.

These are, of course, my opinions :) That's what these boards are for.

I'm not sure if 6600 non gt can even SLI. Even the 6600 GT's in SLI are no good compared to other single card solutions in the price range. Also, if he has an AGP board that would make him buy a new mobo (processor problems?) just for 2x PCI-E and such. If he has an AGP mobo, I'd get the 6800 nu AGP. It can be had for less than $200 now and AGP 6800 nu's can be unlocked to have 16 pipes and 6 vertex shaders like the 6800 GT. If he doesn't have an AGP mobo and has PCI-E, I'd look at the radeon cards. For PCI-E they're usually priced cheaper (x800 xl vs. 6800 gt and x800 vs. 6800 nu). I was looking around for a card for my friend and an x800 pci-e can be had for the same as the 6800 nu AGP... 6800 nu PCI-E tend to go slightly higher than 200 ... closer to 250.

i thought only 6600GT and above could SLI....

The nvidia reference cards can't SLi...but several manufacturers have made SLi versions of the vanilla 6600 anyways...

No I would not say it is worth it. The extra ram is absolutely useless on that card. Either get the Normal 6600 or spend the $200 on a better card.

I think $200 will buy a vanilla 6800 which would probably beat 2 vanilla 6600 's in sli(if that's even possible, think it's 6600gt and up support sli). Oh plus I don't think sli utilizes the memory on both cards, 2 256mb cards will only give you 256mb of video ram.
