Is CPU too slow for physics than a GPU?

Why don't games use the extra cores in CPUs to do the physics calculation instead of having a second videocard dedicated to physics only?
 
They do. It's videocard physics that's too slow currently. It's a design flaw though, great for modelling, bad for gaming.

Yeah, GPU physics still hasn't worked out all of the kinks yet unfortunately.
Also, the fact that it's NVIDIA only sometimes leaves a sour taste for AMD users, though I don't blame NVIDIA for not sharing though, market share is important too.
 
I dont have much confidence in either Nvidia or AMD at this point. Nvidia is all *exclusive* about their physics, but only a handful of current and announced games utilize those - meanwhile AMD doesn't really take a standpoint beyond supporting open source stuff in the future.

I was excited about Intel's demonstration of the new Havok physics utilizing, all cores and threads on a modern cpu.

1 thing that needs to improve is the realnes vs what looks cool. If you've seen the flowing water in Cryostasis behave like mercury, or the bridge explode in semi-moon gravity style in that new Intel video , you know what I mean
 
physic's has a long way to go. but Havok seems to be the most promising physics engine so far and BFBC2 has shown some of its potential but i think we will see a lot more over the next year or so. but theres honestly no reason for gpu physic's with the processors we have today and havok proves that.
 
GPU physx has too much lag. Going over PCI-E to vid card to CPU takes too long. Its been DOA since the start.
 
Physics is fun. I'm gonna write a new physics engine for the Phenom II X6. Any features you guys want in it?
