is backlight bleed always going to be a problem?

just picked up a gateway 2275 and i have bleeding across the top and bottom of the screen
it is only noticable when i play videos full screen with black bars across the top and bottom

im wondering if i should return this one and see if i can get another one with less of a problem
its not really that detrimental to video, its just something i would notice and piss me off the entire time

do all LCDs have this problem basically, just to lesser or greater levels?

That isn't backlight bleeding, thats a defect.... plain and simple. Backlight bleeding is the backlight luminance coming (evenly!) through the entire panel itself which causes the display to be a dark gray, rather than a true black. If you've got extra light leaking out around the bezel onto the edges of the screen, or if the backlight isn't evenly bleeding through the panel (eg: your seeing clouding or banding) I would personally consider that LCD to be defective. See if they'll exchange it as a manufacturers defect.

I'm having the same problem with my Acer AL1916W I didn't think it was gonna bother me too much but after watching hours of movies it really is annoying I think I'm gonna try to return mine.

I thought so because every lcd I've owned or used for work and such has some degree of backlight bleed. That is until I got my Dell 2007FPW....I guess I got lucky because you have to stare at a black background in a dark room (I use a 'blank' screensaver) for quite some time to make out a faint bit of bleed at the top center. Needless to say it is imperceptible in normal daily use.

interesting that every lcd in circuit city, best buy, and comp usa today was defective... nice.

I personally consider some "backlight bleed" normal, usually faintly visible in the corners. However i had HP LP2065 which had so bad backlight bleed problem that most of the left side was completely gray instead of "black". This would show up clearly on anything black or dark, it didnt need to be fullscreen black image, just something simple as dark shadows etc.

Compared to 3 other identical monitors (same model) and none had even close to what i had. Frankly, thats just unacceptable.

Theres just no excuse for this kind of random **** thats clearly something that could be fixed. If theres displays of the same model and have little or no visible bleeding then its fixable. Instead they "sit on it" and expect consumers to buy whatever **** they send you then say "**** happens".

Shame really, that display was pretty nice with no dead pixels of any kind. Waiting for a replacement...

Sarcasm noted.

I hope you didn't purchase one. Don't settle for mediocrity, you need to vote with your dollars. I've had many LCDs and none of them have light leakage like that save for one laptop screen... a budget one which I returned. However if you're willing to buy whatever shoddy junk is shoved in front of you then be my guest. I won't be supporting manufacturers that put out shoddily built equipment.

Backlight bleeding as I've described is just part of the tech. Nobody has managed to make a LCD without some backlight bleed... but there are plenty that don't have light leakage around the bezel or uneven bleeding. So why settle for it if it bothers you?

i cant seem to find any that dont, save for 1 21 inch gateway.. thats about a year old, but has color wash, i may have to stay crt

To answer the thread question: yes, until manufacturers start using LED arrays as backlight instead of CCFL rods. Problem is, LEDs cost more, and lcds have turned into a price war. Most people would rather pay extra for a bigger screen than a LED backlight, sadly.

That's because there is only one LED backlit LCD available and it costs a rather large amount of cash, also there is no larger or widescreen versions on the horizon. At the moment LED costs about 10 times more than an equivalent 'non LED' screen and stangely enough people don't seem to want to pay that  . Don't get me wrong, I want LED backlit displays but they'll have to be a lot cheaper before I consider one and I am willing to spend quite a lot. I praise NEC for what they are doing with the tech but it's naive to expect a screen like the 'NEC SpectraView LCD2180WG LED' to fly off the shelves.

It's really a question of quality. I hate back light bleeding and dead pixels. Uneven back lighting creating bad color uniformity drives me crazy.

I can't stand a monitor with a TN panel, I have made a decision that I will never buy a monitor with a TN panel ever again in my life. The color non uniformity just is to much for me.

Now, for back light bleeding and someone said all monitors at bestbuy are defective....."BINGO". We all know Bestbuy is not the pinnacle for electronics consumer quality. Their computers are garbage, and the quality of the monitors they sell are pretty much low to mid range.

Back light bleeding can be caused by poor assembly and poor quality control as well as bad panels. To get a perfect monitor is I would guess like a 20 percent chance now a days, BUT if everything has gone right and you get a great panel assembled properly with high quality control you can get a perfect panel with no back light bleeding.

I got one in the Benq fp241w. I went through about 4-5 monitors to get to this one all with some form of back light bleeding or uneven back lighting, or one with dead pixels, except when I found the benq.

Wow cool, I never knew about this. So this is the ONLY one available? are there any others that are expected out, I would really like to see these in person.

Edit: Holy cow, 6500 USD for one of these. I can see why there is only one model now.

Yeah, they are more than just a "little overpriced" which means we won't see many of these any time soon..
