i was planing to buy a amd 64 3000+ cause its fast as p4 ht and its 64bit and cheap.i would belive when win xp64 or some like that comes out it will make it even more faster than p4 ht.
when i was choosing a video card it went difficult i havent seen a amd64 chipset based mobo that is pci-e and all the new cards coming out are pci-express or so it seems to me anyway.so sould i buy a amd 64 3000+ and mid-prise agp video card and accept the fact that in future if i want to uppgrade i have to buy a new faster processor maybe OC it and a 6800 ultra and OC that also cause all the new cards are in pci-e.So is agp now officially dead or what?
 
I think AGP will have 2-3 years left still before it is taken over by PCI-E. Don't worry about that :)
 
I agree. For one, it's harder than hell to find a power supply that even has the 6 pin connector for pci-express cards. I don't think they're selling too well yet. Once the nForce 4 boards come out, then they probably will start selling a lot better.

Yes but IIRC, it took almost 5 years to die because my KK266, which is not that old, still has 1 ISA slot and was one of the latest mobos with any ISA slots. This should be the same for AGP.

To kill AGP, it would need to stop producting top-end video cards for AGP then it will die slowly until all is gone.
 
Consumers like us will decide the longevity of AGP. The sooner people start building newer computers that incorporate Pci-e the quicker it will die. It sure would help if there was any performance benefit when making the move.

I don't think the consumers have much say with this. It seems the videocard manufacturers are cramming this one down our throat at a quick pace in my opinion. With motherboard w/PCI-e availability being pretty low, they are putting out a great deal of PCI-e cards anyway.

I expect the next generation of cards will be prodominantly PCI-e with only AGP offerings for the budget/mainstream parts.
 
Yeah. It's gonna get pricy. New mobo for a new video card. Blech.

Makes me want to stick with my broken one and do it all at once, but I don't know.
 
you'll still have a couple years with AGP, and in technology terms thats more than enough.
 
and pcie based system you get today will still require a complete overhaul when the latest games come out to push it, so save your money and get present day hardware to run present day games the best. No AGP based system is gonna run unreal3 all that well, but then no pcie system of today will either.
