Is a transparent LCD possible?

Obviously this image is a fake because you can't see the monitor stand, but are all transparent LCDs faked? If it could be done, I don't imagine the image would be very bright in normal lighting, but could it be done?
 
Not saying its not impossible, but... there's some hurdles for current technology.

Say, the light coming from the magazine - green specifically. Considering that only green wavelengths are going through the monitor, the monitor has two choices - either display that wavength of colour or block it. Well, in the sense of a TN panel and brightness.

This is based off the assumption that the backlight produces most of the visible spectrum of light (white) and the subpixels block inappropriate wavelengths.

OLED display is cool, though.

In theory maybe.

But even a "fully open" LCD TFT only let through a small fraction of the light from the backligth (through like 6-7 different filters, polarizers and diffusers), so a transparent LCD monitor would be very dark. The backlights in these things are very bright on their own.

Interesting post near the bottom of the first page says: "I took one apart today. Turns out that the backing was actually the polarizer film. The display was semi transparent when I took of the backlight, but still had a green/yellow-ish color. Taking of the polarizer made it a bit more transparent, but the display doesn't work very well without."
 
LCDs are transparent by nature (home made projectors are just an LCD panel with a really strong backlight), but as said the quality will suffer when it isn't 'fed' white light and it will get dark.

OLED is the way to go for this, works beautifully and just the way you'd expect/hope. You can also project an image on a piece off glass making it semi-transparent and that can work quite well too but in other contexts, but you of course have the problem of things obstructing the projection.

And the poor mans solution is to take a photograph of the wall/desk behind your monitor and use it as your wallpaper :)
(which could be what is used in OPs image)
 
Dude, that's cool. A transparent OLED isn't going to give a high contrast image, but for situations where color uniformity isn't important, that would be nice.
 
No they can't be transparent and still have a viewable image as you see it in that pic.
