very noob question but it is essential in ordering my parts for when i install windows....and generally instaaall other software.

do yuo actually need a cd/dvd ''drive'' or does the hard drive have a input for a cd as well as the general memory. the reason i ask in the underside of HDD drives from their pctures seem to have a cd like silver input into them...

cn=an someone please enlighten me to whatis essential please see my build thread http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1037190122#post1037190122

You could go through some hassle and use a USB drive to install the OS, I don't think you would need a CD drive then.

Those pictures are just for show, you don't actually expose the drive internals. Dropping a strand of hair on that thing is like polishing your car with a grinder.

A HDD (Hard Drive) is Not a CD/DVD drive, and they are not interchangeable. I took a look at your build thread, and your obviously new to building your own PC (thats OK, every single person on this forum was new at one point)

Here is the absolute basics you need to build a PC
Case (will come with case fans)
Motherboard (you mentioned firewire in your build thread, you dont need it)
RAM (memory)
CPU (will come with stock cooler if you buy retail)
Video Card
CD/DVD drive
HDD
Power supply

Of course you can get creative and build a computer without a CD/DVD drive and install everything via USB drive, but I'd do a basic build first before you start trying to figure out alternatives.

Hmm, Im trying not to laugh, but I hope you was joking. Lol. Anyway, a HDD, or Hard Disk Drive is a magnetic platter to store data. Usually in speeds of 7200 rpm and above. It is alot faster, then a CDROM or DVD Rom Drive can do. It is a enclosed system, sealed air tight so NO DUST PARTICLES may enter the drive. NO YOU CANNOT OPEN the hard disk drive and put a CD in it. That picture is just for show. YOU WILL make your drive become useless once opened.

For a complete system build you would need....

Case...
Power Supply....
Motherboard.....
CPU......w/Heat Sink Fan
Ram.........
Hard Drive........
CD/DVD Drive.......
Operarting System..........
Graphics Card.......Or Use Onboard Motherboard Video...

You need to replace the heads with lasers, then it might work for CDs. You should be able to remove the platters and stack a bunch of CDs and it will read/write to them in stripe.

Ok, I was just kidding.

i actually lol'ed, but i guess you have to start from somewhere...and HardOCP is a good place to start...

Won't work. The hard drive is only 3.5", the CD drive is 5.25". What you need to do is throw those puppies on a lathe and take off 1.75"
