Any successes in unlocking a 7800gt to a gtx that anyone's heard about yet or is it not possible this time around.

is 7800gt unlockable?

From what I've seen so far, it seems as though you can "unlock" the additional pipes but theres no performance gain.

No, it is not unlockable. Nvidia corrected their mistake from the 6 series cards and have hardlocked these cards! Makes buying a GT vs. GTX even stupider than ever!

yeap the core is locked, cant do nothing to it.

well,
maybe nvidia ain't such a "pal" afterall .i was all se to buy a GT .
looks like i'll just put it on hold a bit longer or buy one of the older cards 6800-or tx and forget about the 7800 untill it becomes at least somewhat reasonable . a $380 card that would unlock to 24 would have been a bargin--but one that won't -- i think i'll set on my $$ for a bit longer for my nest 7800gt/7800gtx.

I'd like to see some benchmarks of an overclocked 7800GT vs a stock GTX, just to see how much of a gain those extra pipes give it at differnt IQ levels and what not.

well , i have found a few places and threads where they have opened up the 4 pipes . (or so they claim)
it may be possible to unlock the extra pipes IF the core has the extra pipes to start with .
nvidia may be binning these chips with re-ject gtx vga chips --so some may have extra pipes and some may not . it is going to take some time to get the extra pipes thing sorted out .
later batches may have better cores or they may be worse --time will tell if their is a good chance to mod one to gtx -- i'm thinking it may be posible but i hate be the bleding edge --maybe when there is more data i'll try it on mine. my experience with the x800pro pci-e was about 50% would unlock --although on the agp it was close to 100%-- so we will have to check this out.if nvidia's yeilds are good-- it might be worth a try.
