Is 6600GT OK on this setup?

I want a little more gfx-firepower in ut2k4/wow/cs:s etc.

my comp is now:

P4 2.0 northwood (no oc)
512 mb ddr333 crucial
mobo with 845D chipsset i think, and AGP 4x
geforce 4 mx460 gfx.. :)

so yea the 6600GT is one hell of an upgrade considering my gfx but will it be bottlenecked too much by the other parts? is this a good upgrade?

btw also wondering if my 300 watt power supply can manage (Nexus NX-3000 http://www.nexustek.nl/nx3000.htm), cause i also have 3 harddrives (40,80,120 gb)

plz help

You will definately see a big improvement. I think that it is worth it. What brand and model of PSU do you have?

You should be just fine.

Your CPU will bottleneck a bit, but you will see a huge increase in gaming speed. :)

It is a good upgrade, and your PS *should* be able to handle it (they are not created equal, so... there ya go).

I hope this helps.

BTW: CS:S plays sweet on this card. :)

Nice upgrade, that's actually the same thing I would do, CPU is a bit of a bottleneck but the architecture is there for good overclocking to remove some of that eventually ;)

Why dont you take some benchmarks, I bet your cpu wont bottleneck the leats bit. Maybe a little bit on WOW as it has a lot of non graphical calculations to do. Although I am forgetting its a p4 2gig, not an Athlon. Do a benchmark.

P4 2Gig is actually less of a hit as far as a bottleneck than a Barton-core is, proof of concept...

Get a 6800GT, run 1280x1024 on battlefield vietnam on both processors, see which one fails to skip ;)

I've done it before, it's actually interesting... pitty, too, considering the amount of Athlons I have lying around.

oh dear.. just found out my PSU is infact a Nexus NX-3000 wich is 300 watt. It is supposed to be pretty good tho (and silent) and i havent had problems with it or anything, but will it do ?

hmmm... i have all my stuff listed in my sig of a 380 W and it works just fine. i think you can get away with 300W for a 6600GT but dont get mad at me if it doesnt work :)

A friend of mine runs a 3.0C with a 6800GT@ Ultra speeds with 1 HDD and 2 optical drives. He's using just an Antec 330Watt PSU. So you should be fine as long as the 12v rails are decent on that thing.

Okay I got the card today and it works fine :) my PSU seems to work it out just fine, but i ordered a new hefty one anyway tho so im sure power will be okay.

WoW now runs ALOT better!
with high details & 1280x1024 the game is around 50-60 fps average and it feels very good and smooth, very enjoyable. If i tried these settings with my old gfx et would be unplayable. And even with low details it ran about 30 fps average..

Performance boost in cs:s & ut2k4 is not that great though, better graphics but the fps is almost the same actually! (this goes especially for UT (high details + 1152x864 versus medium details + 1152x864) So i kinda conclude these games like CPU power alot..? and maybe faster memory.. can anybody confirm this?

About cs:s.. even after i installed the card, it still had Directx 7.0 locked and greyed out in settings -> video. To fix this i had to insert "-dxlevel 90" ni launch options to force the game run dx 9.0, it wouldnt do this automaticly :S. Anyway this allows for much better graphics, so if do a similar upgrade to a gfx with dx 9 hardware support, check this :)

So well overall the upgrade is much like i expected.. I guess next step is to upgrade cpu/mobo/memory . :(
