is 27" really necessary?

I'm currently on 23" and 1080p, is there a point for me to get a 27" 1080p display?

Having 23" has more pizels/inch so I can have it closer to myself, getting "fake" 27"

What is your viewing distance?

My thought is if you're sitting close, go 1440p or go home at 27"

It's all personal preference. I'm using a 1920x1200 24" monitor and am thinking of getting a 27" monitor with a higher res. I personally hate 1080p, but other people find it to be perfect for them. I agree with the "bigger is always better", though not always. Up to a point. I don't think I'd want a 30" or larger monitor, as I think that would be too big, but 27" seems to be the "sweet spot" for me. Hopefully I'll know more after doing some research and picking one up ;)

I see no point in going larger than 23-25" for 1080p/1200p for PC use. Unless:
1. For some reason you have to have it mounted farther away.
2. Your vision needs some assistance.

For competitive gaming, larger monitors are detrimental, even higher resolution ones, since you lose the ability to see the whole screen(and any targets on it) without moving your eyes.

For non-competitive gaming, and for productivity, going 27" is totally worth it, if you go 1440p.

I went from a 23 inch 1080p to a 27 inch 1080p and not only was it worth it but I would never go back to a 23 inch as the extra space just adds to the experience.

I had the apple 27 ACD and went from that to an LG 1080p 27 inch, I saw no difference from 2ft away vs the 1440p other then the letters were much smaller on the 27 1440p and the gaming performance was worse.

I play tons of battlefield and other fps and I had no issues going from 23 inch to 27 inch. My fov was not affected negatively. Have you tried both? I personally love 27 inch, seems to be the right size for me.

That depends on the game. In some you see more with bigger resolution, giving you an advantage.

Bigger is better. Always.

1000

Bigger is better I agree. This is no brainer.

No. If you're like the OP and have the flexibility to sit closer to the monitor, a 23" 1080p will look just like a 27" 1080p if you sit at the right distance. Personally I can't think of any reason to go with a bigger monitor at the same resolution if you can adjust your distance to the monitor to compensate like the OP can, but I'd be interested in hearing arguments for it.

i am going to buy a monitor, and i dont know if the 27 really its better then the 23... More space, that's right, but smaller text and worse for the eyes strain i guess...

I agree completely with your statement. As a bonus the power draw and heat dissipation is less from smaller panels.

I've got a 27" 1080p, and I hate the DPI. Pixels are just too big. I'd stay where you're at or go with a 2560x1440.

I actually just ordered one of the crazy cheap Korean 2560x1440 27" monitors, we shall see how that turns out.

This. 27" at 1920x1080, yuck.

Wouldn't 21.5" or 22" be even 'better' then?

At 1080p also? Sure why not, if you don't mind sitting even closer.

Man we're such snobs here at [H] :D I was on a 27" 1920x1200 for a few years and it was great. I'm actually on a 24" now because of better input choices, but 27" 1920x1200 wasn't bad. Or are you just talking about the 1080 part, in which case I agree.

I'm talking about 27" 1920x1080 screens. They are trash. They look like ass due to the dot pitch.

Minor correction: I was on a 26" 1920x1200, not 27".

So a 26" 1920x1200, which is very similar in dot pitch, is also ass? Like I said, we're such snobs here at [H] :D

I wouldn't go over a 24" at 1920x1200. Yeah, we are definitely snobs here. :)

Tried a 27" 1080p, sent it back and got a 24" 1920x1200. Like it much better - even sitting about two feet from the screen. Its just personal preference and you'll never know what your is until you try them out.

I have a 37" 1920X1080 TV as my current monitor. Don't really do much gaming, so it's primary use is movies and using a music stand for digital sheet music (I play violin.) When I'm actually doing things with it, my eye is between 2-2.5 feet away.

ima probably pick up a u2713hm @ 1440p. i wouldnt get one unless its a higher resolution

i think its a better solution then getting 2 more u2412m.. I THINK

Aww hell yea. Going from 22" to 26" 1200p in gaming was a huge difference. No longer did I have to squint or be glued to the screen in order to spot baddies in fps games.

I had a 27" Hanns-G, 1920x1080 res though and it wasnt that great.
Then I got a 24" Samsgun T240 (I still use, on the side) 1920x1200 Resolution, Love this monitor.
Main display is a 27" Catleap, 2560x1440. I will never look back @ lower resolution monitors for gaming and/or general use. I love it.

Bigger is better. I want a 30" 2560x1600 Dell. but out of my price range.

this cant be true... bigger is not always better. If so 50 its better? There's a limit to upper size.

btw do said you still use the 24' monitor. When's that? Is it more appropriate then the 27 for any usage?

I'll rephrase. Bigger is Better, if you have appropriate resolution.

I also hooked my computer up to my 52" Samsung ToC LCD. 1080p wasn't enough.

I use the 24" for browsing, reading tutorials or helping me organize my computer files.

But do you think that 52 with a great resolution something like 4096x2098 or whatever is great? You have to be far away. I think there's a size where you have to move your head, and that's not good.

But the 24 is mainly as a second monitor or you use for browsing as primary. You prefer to browse on 24 even if you are not using the 27 for anything? I am trying to decide wether going 23/24 or 27.

I dont know if 27x2$ is worth it a 23/24x1$...

I use my 50" TV in my room quite a bit for "PC" stuff. But then I'm sitting 10-12' away

Don't know what his answer might be, but I'd say when you've run out of room on your 27", it's nice to be able to shove things over onto another monitor, especially if it's one you already owned.

I just received a 27" 2560*1440. I have used 24" 1920*1200 monitors and love them but this 27" is just amazing. I use my monitors for productivity and gaming. I have a 22" 120Hz 1680*1050 also as well as a 3D projector. This will be my monitor of choice from now on. I plan to get 2 more.

Also, do not get a matte finish.

The problem to about the korean monitors is the glossy monitor. I guess that the best solution is the semi-glossy.

I was using a 32inch sharp aquous as my monitor for years before I went down in size to get a 120hz 23" monitor. To be honest though, I feel like once the opportunity presents itself, I'll upgrade to 27. I feel it is the middle ground between just enough and too big.

As I am primarily a gamer, I went from a 30" 1600p IPS to a 27" 1080p TN 120hz capable monitor and I won't be going back. IMO, for gaming, 120hz is a must, and I find 27" is a great size even at 1080p.

Dot pitch isnt a problem for me, I just force at least 4x AA in all of my games. I just cannot go back to a blurry 60hz panel for my FPS gaming needs.

I do more than just game. I wouldn't want to do any photo editing and look at a lot of text at 1920x1080 on a 27" monitor. Hell 24" monitors at 1920x1080 are painful for me to look at.

I went from a 2407 to a 2311 and now a 3011. No chance in he'll I will ever go lower. I might try 3x 24s but it is debatable. I want 3x 3011s but it would be another 2k so yea.

Hey OP, let me ask you this question.....have you ever heard anyone say, 'Dam bro, your monitor is too big, you need to downsize!'
