Is 1920x1200 really worth it?

Is getting a monitor with a 1920x1200 resolution really worth it? I'm looking to get a widescreen LCD monitor soon and I'm torn between the two most common resolutions - 1680x1050 and 1920x1200. Is the larger resolution really worth all that extra money?

The problem is, getting a 1920x1200 LCD is almost twice as expensive as getting a comparable 1680x1050 LCD...and money is fairly tight, especially with university tuition due shortly.

I know 1920x1080 is true HDTV, and it'll look much nicer on a 1920x1200 screen - but when will normal movies actually come out in that resolution? And will I really benefit from the extra 540,000 pixels?

I do a lot of Photoshop work, a lot of Remote Desktop stuff, of course lots of MSN and I enjoy the occasional game (I have a Radeon 9800 Pro). I'd appreciate any advice on whether I should buy the smaller one now, or keep saving up for the larger one.

can u tell the difference when u a gaming? lol.....i don think u will look at every lil detail when u a fighting with others. Thats said, only if u look at it really hard then u can tell the difference btw 1600 and 1920.

then keep thinking from that.......worth it?

Well, I only game once in a while, so I'm not concerned about it that much. Plus, my Radeon 9800 Pro probably couldn't handle 1920x1200 in most newer games, so I'd have to run it in a lower resolution, anyways.

I'm wondering mainly about the extra space while running productivity apps, and for watching movies (having the true 1080p HDTV resolution). Is getting a monitor that can show 1080p in all its glory worth it (i.e. will movies be coming out in 1080p anytime soon?). I'd like this monitor to last (and not be obsolete) for at least 3 years or so.

It's a matter of opinion I think. If you buy a 1680x1050 monitor you will not be able to play 1080p movies natively, You will also be losing resolution to a 1600x1200 resolution monitor. With 1920x1200 you have support for 1080p and gain resolution from 1600x1200. So a higher res monitor is more future proof. I'm using my 1920x1050p monitor to watch movies from a distance so the extra size is important to me.

I used to have a Dell Inspiron 8500 with 1920x1200 resolution, and man, that thing spoiled me. I would never maximize browser windows, because everything would look reaaally spread out... I had room to do a million things at once it seems like.

Once I sold the laptop and got a 17" LCD, things seemed a lot more squeezed... but now I have a Dell 2005FPW (1680x1050) monitor.

So I've had monitors of both resolutions, and IMO it's not worth double the cash for the few extra pixels. I do stuff like Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Reason 2.5 (music synthesis and sequencing) and I find the 2005FPW has all the room I need for everything. It would certainly be "cooler" to have the higher resolution, but considering how cheap the 2005FPW right now, I think it would be the best idea to go with that!

I doubt you would notice any difference between the resolutions playing high definition movies, all the major playback codecs are very nice about scaling.

With 1920x1200, u don't have to upgrade ur monitor for next couple years. Actually, u save ur $$$.

I think that's true with any monitor upgrade.

If he doesn't plan on upgarding his video card to play that resolution in games, and doesn't mind the fact that he can't do 1080p, and doesn't care if he has the extra 4" then going for the smaller monitor isn't that big a deal.

Personally I am using 2x 2005fpw's... If I could have afford 2405fpw's I would have, but I don't regret my purchases.
