Is 1600x1200 close enough?

I have a 22" widescreen monitor and I have played a few games with 1680x1050 resolution. Now I am installing many of my old games but doesnt have a 1680x1050, but instead 1600x1200, much older games dont have both but I can window those. Is 1600x1200 close enought for best resolution? I really like the way Vista64 has been working on my games so far. I am currently using Evga 8800GT AKIMBO card. Thanks

It is highly doubtful that your monitor would be able to run at 1600x1200, unless your monitor has some secret scale-down mojo that every other 20/22" widescreen monitor doesn't have. Your next best bet would be to run them at 1280x1024 and, if you are using a DVI cable, select "Use NVIDIA scaling with fixed-aspect ratio" in the flat panel scaling section of the NVIDIA control panel.

I've seen games offer 1600x1200 even though my monitor is 1680x1050. It just scales it, still looks like crap.

www.widescreengamingforum.com has a wiki for getting a whole bunch of older games to support your resolution, maybe the games you're playing will be there.

I've had to edit in my own resolution (1680x1050) into a bunch of games including Doom 3 + Exp, Sims 2 (dont laugh, for the gf haha), etc

i tried to run RTCW @ 16x12 on my native 1680x1050 LCD...big problems. the screen went black but the game was still active. i had to hard restart and then every time i tried to run RTCW i got an error and the game wouldn't load. ended up having to reinstall and select the next resolution that would work (1280x1024). might just be that game, so ymmv. i now avoid trying to run any resolution above 1050.

1680x1050 is the widescreen version of 1280x1024.
1920x1200 is the widescreen version of 1600x1200.
If you want closest 1:1 pixel ratio go with 1280x1024, displaying higher resolution than your equipment supports will make the image look really bad. Easiest way to test it out is to get a 1600x1200 wallpaper to see what it looks like on your screen.

Stop by widescreengamingforum and see if theres a widescreen fix for it, most of the time you can set custom resolutions in the cfg or ini files.

If not, the next best thing is to select a resolution which fits within 1680x1050, probably 1280x960 is the next 4:3 screensize down, and simply enable monitor scaling in the video drivers to scale to fit the screen but maintain aspect ratio so it doesn't stretch.
