Is 1600 x 1200 too small?

I have the Samsung 193P and generally like it very much. I bought it at Best Buy and have a couple of days remaining to give it back if I so decide.

Because the pixel pitch is largest on the 19" LCD monitors, I am wondering about moving up to a 20".

My eyesight is not great (I am 51!) and use glasses for reading and viewing the screen.

Will I find text at 1600 x 1200 on a 20" LCD significantly smaller than text at 1280 x 1024 on a 19" screen?

Yes, text is much smaller at 1600x1200 on a 20" screen than 1280x1024 on a 19" screen. However, I find text to be a little bit too big on 19" LCD's due to large pixel pitch. If you have problems reading text on a 19" LCD I wouldn't reccomend moving up to 20".

You could also increase the text size (like from 72 dpi to 96 or even 120 dpi).

I don't find 1600x1200 text to be that small on my 19 inch monitor, but my face is always really close to the monitor...

I think the best thing you can do right now is to look at a monitor first hand at 1600x1200 on the monitor you're looking to buy. Of course, I'm pretty sure Best Buy won't demo the text and stuff, since they always play those stupid promo videos on the monitors.

You're right. I haven't been able to see 1600 x 1200 anywhere because most dealers have all their LCD monitors connected to the same crappy PC/video card. I will try see one or just buy one to try.

Maybe 19" is the best option for me, though.

I don't really need a screen bigger than 17" but the 1280 x 1024 text is more readable on the 19" for me with my lousy eyesight.

The thing I don't like about the 19" is the larger pixel pitch (.294 vs. .264). To me the picture is slightly more grainy than a 17" because of it.

The 193P is a good monitor, however, and not all that much more $ than the 173P.
