at random times usally relating to the wifi adaptor i get an IRQL LESS OR NOT EQUAL error

It's a driver issue. Make sure you have the latest possible driver from your wireless card's manufacturer. If possible, try to find out what chipset that wireless card is using; you might be able to find newer drivers that are more reliable and resolve those problems with the so-called "reference" drivers for most wireless cards.
Atheros, Broadcom, Intel... those are the 3 big ones for wireless card chipsets now - meaning the chips on the card are probably made by one of those 3 companies even if the card says D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, etc on it.
Intel makes their own chipsets and the cards too so they are pretty easy to spot since it'll say Intel all over the wireless card - they only make mini-PCI cards that mount inside laptops anyway.

If you have a QX6700 as you say in your sig, it's a Core 2 Quad, not a Core 2 Duo.
