IRQ sharing - need advice

I've just put together a KV8Pro system where I was having a problem with my Audigy 2 crackling. The fix I found was to change the computer driver from Uniprocessor PC to ACPI PC. However, where before I was getting each device reassigned from the BIOS to it's own IRQ with the uniprocessor driver, now I get USB sharing with the video, as shown in the BIOS - in fact, all my devices keep the IRQs assigned in BIOS. I'm assuming modern cards and drivers can handle IRQ sharing, just worried about video performance degrading. Trolling around other forums and posts, it seems all recent Abit boards (I know my BE7 did) share an IRQ between USB and video. I'm running XP SP2 with a 6800GT, btw.

I've done a bit more research, and from what I understand the difference between ACPI and Uniprocessor HALs is APIC support (Support through uniprocessor HAL only) My read on the way APIC works is that some IRQs are virtual, and the actual IRQ use is hidden from the user, but there are still devices sharing IRQs, as determined by the physical traces on the mobo - on my KV8Pro one USB shares with AGP, another USB with IDE. Is this assumtion correct?
 
my last 2 builds have had about 8+ devices on irq9 and worked fine. Both were intel chipsets.

If you dont have problems, dont worry about it, we're not using ISA boards anymore.
 
Yes, you are correct.

PCI devices do not have IRQs per se, what they do have are INIT lines. There are 4 INIT lines on a PCI bus (except for some SiS chipsets in which there are 6) A through D.

Sharing INIT lines is a fundemental part of the PCI spec. If a device did not support sharing, aside from being non-PCI compliant, it would most likely not work at all. There is nothing you can do to change this, its simply how PCI and AGP work.

You can shift the numbers in device manager around, but remember, thats all they are, numbers....
 
i think the OS automatically shuffles arounds the IRQs according to what ever device needs it BUT...i 2 have a problem...i get stop errors the D1 type of stop errors...if only i could see exactly what programs were accessing what...but nooooooo, the stupid Micro$hit developers refused to let me do something like that damn them
