IRDA: where have all the headers gone?

Ok, back in the day (meaning a few years ago) every time i opnened up a computer, there were IRDA headers. I remember thinking to myself, why is is that nobody uses this feature, as an IR sensor on my computer would be quite sweet. Now, *I* realize that it really would be sweet and want to do it, however, my motherboard (Abit IS7-E) doesn't have one. I cheked the manual and there is no mention of it. However, there is a header called SMB1. I tried searchinf on google, but i think most of the sites are talking about somehting else.

Anyway, if somebody could tell me if my board does have an undocumented IRDA header, what the SMB header is for, or where to find an internal USB IRDA reciever that goes into a 3.5 inch bay (or 5.25), i'd be very appreciative. (i know of plenty of places to get an external one, but frankly, i dont want it).

Hi there
Smb if memory serves me corectly stands for system management bus. I can't remember what its for though. I remember an article about hooking up thermometer on overclockers.com or something.

About the external irda you could always mod it into an interal one. Just mold it somehow to a face plate then run the cable to the outside.

yeah, i realize i could mod an external. I would actually get a USB one and keep it completely internal by using the internal usb headers. As for molding the thing; i could just rip out the diode and mount it on one of the 3.5 inch bays and put a piece of ir-permissive clear plastic infront of it. This way i would not have to mold anything. However, I would rather go with a prebuilt option as im not a huge case modder, nor am i particularly crafty with the dremel. However, that is definately an option at this point.

And when i looked up SMB, i saw system management bus, which i thought was probably something else. However, after reading your post i realize it may not have been. Thnx alot for your input.

IRDA is not a standard IR sensor. Its only meant for short distance serial data communication

It has a very limited range (2-3 feet MAX). If you are planning to use it as a IR remote sensor it REALLY sucks at it. You will have to hold the remote no more than a foot from it and even then its likely it still may not pick up the remote.

IR remote receiving hardware does exist. The IRMan is a popular option (http://www.evation.com/irman/), it connects to your serial port. There is also UIR (http://fly.cc.fer.hr/~mozgic/UIR/) which connects to your serial port as well and is very similar to IRMan. For the parallel port side of things you have LIRC (http://www.lirc.org)
