Hi all

I had a question paper to do the other day for an interview/job.

The first question was:

"Which one of the following services is not associated with IPv4?

A. DNS
B. DHCP
C. NAT
D. IpSec"

I had no idea, as thought they all were! Anyone sure of the correct answer?!

IPSec is a protacol for securing Internet Protocol though both IPv4 and IPv6

There is no correct answer to that one, I would have left it blank.

Stupid question is stupid.

You could make a case that all of those answers are "associated" with IPv4 (whatever that means).

Me and my colleague who also applied for the job both got confused by it, as like you guys are thinking, they all seem to be associated with IPv4!

Glad I don't appear to be going mad!

Yes, without any further pondering - all of those services are associated with IPV4.

IPSEC is an addon to IPv4, but required for IPv6, so IPSEC would be the closest answer I think.

It is a very poorly worded question. The most decoupled service of them is DNS. DHCP only works on 4 (since 6 doesn't have a DHCP per se), NAT is unneeded with 6, and IPSec is required by 6 and part of 4.

The most decoupled service of them is DNS.
WAT? The entire reason DNS was written was to enable hostnames to be used in lieu of IPv4 addresses without having a hosts file on each computer, i.e. centralized and hierarchical naming.

DHCP only works on 4 (since 6 doesn't have a DHCP per se)
Double WAT? There is a version of DHCP that supports IPv6 as well. It's called DHCP or DHCPv3 if you are picky.

NAT is unneeded with 6
But it does in fact still exist.

IPSec is required by 6 and part of 4
People recite this all the time but have no idea what it really means. But going back to the original question, obviously IPSEC is associated with IP... it like um, has IP in the name...

That's why this question is stupid.
