Ips monitor

As compared to what?

Do you do any graphics or photos?

I am a Software Engineer and I would reccommend either a IPS or PVA over just about any TN.

A little more info would help

Dave

A tn monitor. I'm not doing anything with graphics or photos.

I would be mostly using it for programming and an occasional game(cs 1.6). The monitor will be hooked up to my thinkpad x200.

I was looking at a couple 23" monitors on newegg.

Unless your have the money to blow on an IPS monitor, I wouldn't spend the extra money for one. If you are programming mostly a higher resolution would benefit you more then better clarity. I play games a lot as well and I don't see the need for that expensive of a monitor unless you are a video or picture editor.

I will say that its easier on the eyes for a lot of people. That might make it worth considering. Maybe you should find one to look at and see if you have a preference. The cheaper ips screens like the u2311 are not that expensive compared to 23 inch TN panels I see on newegg all the time(its around $240 with a coupon).

My Dell 2209WA cost $230 shipped.

Programming for the internet usually includes graphics and pictures which require accurate colors. If we are talking about amiture work then why even ask?

The major advantage for programming would be the ability to run it in portrait mode, and still have each eye see the same colour..

what I would say is that the viewing angles for IPS is far superior, so if you do a lot of paired work or moving around your desk(eg standing up), then go for it

i do programming too, have 2xDell 2209WA eIPS and 1 TN no-name panel... i prefer the Dell a lot more, even for mundane tasks like multitasking and programming

I agree with HICKFARM. For a single landscape monitor for software development, I'd suggest TN as well (unless you have extra money as he/she says ...). I do a -lot- of software development on TN and IPS ... unless you are going to multiple screens or portrait, I think TN will save you some money. I have no experience with games, so that may be a different story ...

I am studying for my Master's in CS. I spend a significant amount of time on my laptop. Newegg had some nice IPS 23" monitors for $280ish.

I was also considering the 27" LG monitor (big screen but maxed at 1080p):

Another a 25.5 Asus (16;10):

I am essentially sitting 18" max from my current monitor. I dont think the larger one will be a good idea.

i think u should get an ips monitor like mine u2410, after using the computer for so long i think i deserve to have something that looks good in the eyes. u can go crazy looking at a tn panel when there are better image quality monitors in the world. i have both 2209 and the 2410, the 2209 is 50% better than a tn, and the 2410 goes all the way up to 100%.

I've used the VW266H and the U2311H, and like you - I spend most of my time reading.

The TN, VW266H, looks much shaper. It's definitely easier to read on.

I am pretty sure I am going with an IPS. Is it worth the almost double the cost for the 24" models over the 23" models?

i do have the money, but it's more of a wondering if it's worth the close to double the cost for an extra inch.

Yes it is, if you have the money like you said.

No the U2311H is a superior product to the U2410 at half the price.

For reading Glossy is probably the best as there is no screen door or dirty screen effect. The U2410 has harsh AG coating compared to most monitors which many say leads to eye strain.

If you have 500$ to waste on the U2410 you would be much better off getting any of the Eizo C-PVA panels like the EV2333/FS2331 or SX2262W (16:10 1920x1200) which have far superior image quality and use very little AG coating.

You sure don't like the U2410. I have the U2311(am very happy with it, no problem reading at all, just adjust "no squint" settings in Firefox), but am thinking of exchanging it for the U2410 because of 16:10 resolution.

BTW I had the VW266H. Nice big monitor with washed out colors and poorly designed, hard to get at connectors. Plus a very flimsy wobbly stand.

I have a VW266h a bit of calibration goes a LONG way and stand being wobbly I don't think it is but than again everyones opinion is different.
